8 months old prefers solids over milk?

July 1st, 2008 · 2 Comments

My 8 months old daughter has started avoiding to have formula. She loves to have any kind of solids with interest on her feeding chair. But as soon as its time for formula, She starts getting irritated.
How much of minimum quantity of formula she should have in a day. She has banana mixed with formula, cereals with formula and once homemade vegetables. She takes solids around 3-4 times a day and I try feeding her milk at least 4 times a day ( 6-7 oz) everytime. But now its getting worse. She is uderweight so I am scared if she stops with milk how will she get enough nutrients to develop.

Please Help.

Minimum amount of formula intake needed is 24 oz but Dr's prefer more than that. Solids need to be taken down some, try just twice a day on solids to encourage more formula instead. Cereals are filling but atleast if it is mixed with formula she is getting formula intake that way and it does count towards the oz of formula needed in 24 hrs.

At her age, formula is not her primary source of nutrition. It is a nutritional supplement and used primarily as a source of hydration. You will see increased interest again once she gets the hang of her new feeding routine and the novelty of finger foods and solids wears off. My son did the same thing and so I asked my health visitor about it who told me as long as he has 600ml (20oz) of formula per day, he will not get dehydrated and there will be sufficient nutritional needs met. Treat it like a drink.
I have found that if I offer the bottle about 1/2 hour or so after solids during the day rather than immediately following he will drink more.
