I've only had Indian food once & loved it!!! This was back when I visited a friend in Santa Barbara. I know there are many Indian restaurants in Los Angeles, but I'm looking for a place that is good & affordable. A friend of mine from the east coast told me that most of the Indian restaurants here are pricey, compared to the ones in east coast. She said that the average price for an Indian curry plate is like $7 or $8, but here are @ least $10. Ok, I'm not being cheap or anything. I'm willing to fork the cash over for some good foods, but I don't think that a curry plate should cost me an arm & a leg, y'know. So yea, I'd appreciate it if someone can suggest a few good Indian restaurants to eat around Los Angeles. Perhaps some mom & pop kinda place? Those are always good =).

I like Bollywood Cafe — there's one in Studio City on Ventura Blvd (another on Cahuenga in Universal City). The one in Studio City is small and always crowded. I don't know how much the dishes are, but I've always thought it was pretty cheap….$8-$12 sounds about right. Here's the link:

Little India is in Artesia. My boss is half-Indian, and she swears it is worth the drive.
But if you must stay in LA, I like Electric Lotus on Franklin & Vermont (across from House of Pies). It's not that expensive, though it's not as cheap as a true dive.

Most Indian restaurants offer a lunch or weekend buffet that are usually under $10.
You can get a very reasonably-priced combo plate at India Sweets & Spices in the Atwater Village part of Los Angeles. It's South Indian cusine, so on the spicier side, and vegetarian. If you haven't tried a dosa before, I highly recommend it. http://www.indiasweetsandspices.net/

You MUST head to Artesia! "Little India" is the heart of the Indian community here in Los Angeles. Here, you will not only find restaurants, but clothing shops such as the House of Saris, and Indian gold jewelry stores, such as Vitha Jewelers, and Bhindi Jewelers, Grocery stores such as Bombay Sweets and Snacks and Rasa Indian Groceries. Even State Bank of India has a branch here, in Artesia! If you want Indian beauty treatments, such as Bridal Henna, and eyebrow threading, Karishma Beauty salon and Ziba Beauty Salon can take care of you. And for worship, the Rhadna Krishna Mandir Temple is on Pioneer Blvd too. Just outside Artesia, in neighbouring Lakewood CA, you will find the NAZ 8, an Indian movie theater complex, showing all the latest Bollywood blockbusters! And yes… they have Indian concessions as well as the ubiquitous popcorn. Little India is worth an afternoon of exploring with a lunch stop, or a nice dinner to end your day.
