I have three hens. Almost every day when I come home from work I find 2 intact eggs and one broken and eaten. I have given them oyster shell for calcium. I tried the fake eggs in the nest and I tried filling an egg with mustard. There is always plenty of food and water. Today I found two broken eggs. I know which bird is guilty. If this behavior continues it will be very dangerous for her, probably fatal. If anyone has any more ideas I am willing to give her one more chance before I kill her.
Dee k, I know that eating eggs won't harm her. However, if she keeps eating eggs I will harm her.

Slap the living s**t out of her and rub her face against the egg she just ate and say "NO!!!!"
It works on dogs, why not chickens?

ok what you must do is grab it by the nec put a gun to its head and threaten her that if she eats one more egg ull pop a cap in her face =D lol my parents had a farm a while back and when a chicken eats its own eggs that means that its feeling territorial and will destroy anything. orr when a chicken goes bad you can only kill it because its not that smart to know what to eat or not

what kind of hen is she and thats crazy!! what exactly are you feeding her? try changing her diet instead. and wow the chicken must be picky or something try new foods for it so maybe she will like them instead of eating her eggs.. maybe she eats them b/c she doesnt like the food you are giving her……. hope that helps..(^_^)

Are you sure it's the chicken that is the culprit??? That's really odd - it could very well be her diet though. Check with a feed store & see what they recommend you do.

i have about 40 hens and a few roosters, my hens eat the eggs too but it doesnt hurt them, actually they like to eat eggs and it can become a habbit, mine dont do it often but i also know that they like a varitety of foods so i give them crackers and chips and also some of my fruit like apples, watermelon, and strawberries, those are some of my hens favorites and it tends to keep them happy
wow some people are retarded…you can train chickens but eating there own eggs is normal, i have a chicken that sits on unfertilized eggs and thinks shes a mom, it you stick your hand under her and wiggle your fingers she thinks that she has babies

My hens used to eat eggs occasionally if they became stressed. Make sure the other hens aren't harassing her, ie. trying to take over the nest so that they can lay their own eggs. Even if you have more than one nest, chickens tend to have a favorite that they'll all want to use.

Someon came up with a very good solution that really does work to stop the egg eating, by simply modifing the nest box design. I think this is really cool and you should take a look at the link below:

This really works too because the chickens can't even get to the eggs and it makes things really easy for you too. Easy to collect.

If it is just the one culprit then she is overdoing her act ! She is not in danger from eating eggs ,.that isn't bad for her but she had better watch out as you are loosing lovely eggs & your patience too .
Eggs need to be moved from the nest box at regular intervals,at least twice a day, seeing them around is a temptation more than some birds can resist .I have occasionally faced this problem & have had to keep the hen away from others for a while by keeping her in a separate pen,if she still persists it's her dooms day .

If you continue to leave her in with the other hens you will soon get no eggs.I would give her another shot in a pen byherself, where she cant get to the other hens eggs.Give her a little extra protien in her diet.I give mine a little ground uo kitten chow from time to time when they need extra protien especially during the molt.If you dont want to do that ask your feed dealer if he has any high protien chicken feed,if not maybe he will be willing to order it.Another thing is some times they do this when they dont have feed readily available so make sure you have food out at all times if they are kept in a pen.How many nest boxes do you have for the hens?I always provide a couple more than I actually need,if they are laying together this may help remedy the problem.

I have recently had the same problem with a couple of my hens. A good method to solve the problem is to purchase some fake eggs (clay or solid plastic). These are available for not too much, see http://www.solwayfeeders.com/productsdetail1.asp?STOCK_CODE=1439
Buy a few and the culprit chicken should soon stop.
It worked for me
