are baked potatoes safe to eat after being out all day?

I had one from a picnic and would like to eat it if it's still safe… It was outside for about 5 hours.

It should be fine. Just heat it up in the microwave and put some butter on it. It might be a little dry after being out all day.

yes they might get hard and dry but cover them in baco foil to avoid them going hard and dry.

If you did not add butter or sour creme to it before hand it should be OK. Wrap it up in a moisten towel or paper towel and nuke it.

If in doubt - throw it out!

Honestly, I wouldn't…………sorry. My decision is solidified upon hearing that it was sitting out in the heat for 5 hours. I personally wouldn't eat ANYTHING that was sitting out for 5 hrs, no matter what it was. Have you ever had food poisoning? Can you afford 2 days off spending it in the bathroom (if you're lucky enough not to feel so bad to go to the hospital to have your stomach pumped)…………just a worst case scenario, I don't mean to scare you. But, I really wouldn't. Hope this helps you to decide what to do.

A bunch of things to rule-out before you munch on it:

      1. Was the potato in question sitting with other potatoes, or was it on plate with easily spoil-able potato salad or cole-slaw. Even some residue of steak, fish, chicken or mayo might give me concern.

      2. Was it handled a lot after is was cooked? Could someone who had played a lot outdoors touched it? Small children grubbing about with dirty hands. I know, never happens. But, then again, maybe you know better.

      3. Did it have any dairy on it? Could have spoiled.

      4. Was it covered in anyway? Did you notice any flies or birds around? Some places have a lot, and if they land a lot on the food, you run the risk of dysentery.

      5. Likewise, was the potato sitting exposed on a table with a lot people sitting and talking over it? Sorry, even if the food hasn't been sitting out all day, I find it a bit worrisome. But it depends on proximity, frequency and level of passion with which the people were talking. Yes, this worry might be on the extreme side, but it's a legitmate concern, especially when someone has a cold, etc.

Personally, I wouldn't eat it. Any food sitting outside for hours and hours just doesn't sound that appealing to me, and I don't think it's worth the risk.

But if you are starving and have no choice…and if the potato did not have more spoilable food touching it…and it looked clean…then if you steam it for five minutes it will be moist and probably perfectly safe.
