I just bought 4 Sliver Tail Mollys and 4 Back Mollys and I was just wondering if they are salt water or fresh water fish. I read online that they were salt water but the pet store said fresh so which is correct?

Neither, they are brackish water but can be acclimated to either salt and fresh.

Neither, or both, depending on how you look at it. Wild mollys live mostly in freshwater but are also found in brackish and salt water. (Brackish water is a mix of fresh and salt water). Mollys sold in pet stores have usually been born and raised in freshwater, but they can also be gradually acclimated to brackish or saltwater.

Mollies in a pet store would be kept in freshwater. You can acclimate them to brackish water over time and some people have even been able to switch them totally to salt water.
I hope you are keeping a good watch on the ammonia levels in your tank. Adding 8 adult fish at once is going to cause a huge ammonia spike. You also need at least a 30 gallon tank to house those 8 fish.
