America restaurants like Olive Garden, PF Chang's, and Abuelos. Do other countries like Italy, China, and Mexico have American equivalents?
I am NOT talking about American establishments like McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc. I am aware of the existance of American food chains in other countries. What I want to know is if "American food" is considered a food category like we consider Mexican or Italian foods. For example: Olive Garden is not from Italy, it is an American-based Italian restaurant. I want to know if their countries have generic (or their own chains of) American food restaurants.

Unfortunately, in India, the concept of American food is equivalent to unhealthy fast junk food (McD's, KFC, Domino's Pizza, TGIFs…). They are one in the same. Most Indians probably think that this is the staple American diet.
Alot of people in India do eat family meals that are freshly prepared from scratch.

I've never seen anything other than the fast food chains for "american food". I did see a frozen pizza in an Italian grocery store and it was called "the american", it had every conceivable topping on it. Thats what they think of our eating habits and they are sadly correct. The american version of ethnic food isn't really authentic to that region, I mean do you really think Olive Garden would last in Italy?

Here in Malaysia, "American food" is usually Tex-Mex fare, served in restaurants like Friday's and Chilli's.

A lot of the time there will be regional American restaurants, like a cajun/creole restaurant or something called Californian. I was on a German airline (German Wings) and on their menu they had "American Sandwich" which was a BLT!
