Are we seriously trying to blame the Chinese because Americans never inspected the pet food plants?

Let's get real people. It is America's fault for not having strict pet food standards. We are all aware that China is a poor, communist country without food standards for their own citizens, let alone pet food. Why are we trying to pass the blame? I guess American pet food companies shoudn't have tried to save money by manufacturing overseas.
For all of you who claim China isn't poor, ever lived there and witnessed the living conditions outside of the pretty cities you see on T.V? Yes, the leaders have money, but not anyone else.
Again, my point is, if Americans had their factories in AMERICA, they wouldn't need the Chinese Government to allow them in. It's AMERICA'S fault for being cheap. If I was manufacturing in another country, and I couldn't visit my own product lines or plants, I would pull out of that country. That would be a red flag to me. Not waiting until there was a problem on my hands, then saying' Oh, well…THEY wouldn't let us in.

Its people who poison food not food plants.

China is neither poor nor communist.

It is the fastest growing economy in the world.

They don't have any problem stocking every Walmart/Costco/Target in America, building modern and efficient armed forces, or enforcing strict control on their internet, so to say that they can't manage to implement a decent inspection program in a few industrial plants is ludicrous.

Just another liberal finding some reason to blame america for another country's problems.
Those chinese need to clean up their factories and make sure they're products arn't tainted. In case you haven't noticed, almost all of the things in america that are recalled are from another country. Ecoli from plants in mexico, recalled toyotas from japan, recalled pet food from china. Americans obviously aren't the problem.
Hey balrog, in case you weren't sure…china is still communist. but they're not poor.

The Chinese still won't let FDA inspectors into their country. The Chinese likely spiked the wheat and rice gluten with poison so that it would pass the FDA's tests for protein content.

The problem is lax regulation and a rush to globalization. Capitalism is ruled by greed, read the Jungle by Upton Sinclair.

They imported the material from China, they manufacture it here and in Canada.
The Chinese may have been adding the melamine in an attempt to make the glutens test higher in protein than they would otherwise, and therefore the price would be higher.
Its not the Americans fault in this as there seems to be a more basic greed on the part of the Chinese supplier to get more money.
When the Americans tried to get in to examine the suppliers warehouse and equipment, no letter was sent by the Chinese allowing that, and that is the first step to having inspections there.

I think we need to quarantine all Chinese imports and check them all for compliance to US regulatory standards before allowing them into the country.

      Starting now.

Because as with any large corporation the blame will come down to being one of the workers faults and China hires 10 year old children to work in their sweat shops for ten or twelve hours a day and pay them just a few dollars a day for their work. It will be easier for China to blame their workers then for the United States to blame their workers….cause ten year olds can't vote and even if they could there is no repercussion to a communist state because the voice of the people is not heard.
