Beer Belly… not sure?

June 22nd, 2008 · 10 Comments

So I am just wondering, and this is a stupid question I know! I just want to know if there is anyone who knows of a way that I could lose or tone down my beer belly without… without stopping drinking beer…

I know I should just stop but I love beer and so when I go out thats what I drink. I'm trying to change things but are there any ab exercises I could do? Also, I heard that beer doesn't actually give you a beer belly but I dont really believe that. Is that myth true or false?

thanks…

"Beer belly" is just the same as any other extra weight. Its caused by consuming more calories than you use. The association with beer is likely due to the number of calories in beer, thus excessive beer consumption is often linked with a protruding gut. If you are troubled by this, keep exercising and switch to light beer.

Beer does give you a belly. I know from experience! Try switching to lite beer. Do more exercising like walking. Watch your carb intake. Beer has alot of carbs. Get your carbs from the beer not pasta or bread.

Increase your exercises. If you have 1 to 2 drinks a night (beer, wine or liquor) you will gain an average of 13 pounds a year. If you increase the calories that you burn, it doesn't matter what you drink… you will lose weight. Take the stairs at work. Walk to the bar. Do a few sit ups. Take a bike ride and probably the most important thing… skip the after hours burritos and burgers.

And finally… yes, beer does contribute the the belly but it is hardly the sole reason for it.

Beer doesn't really give you a belly. It's the drunk food that does. When everyone yells "who wants chinese, taco bell, mcdonalds" at 2am, say no and you'll be ok.

it is the extra calories consumed which gives you a beer belly. if your gonna keep drinking the only way to get rid of the beer belly is to find a way to ramp up your metabolism so you burn more calories and cut back on the fatty snacks so you dont consume quite as many calories. try switching types of beer too, i know light beer isnt the best stuff in the world but they are lower in carbs and calories

Ab exercises won't do much but develop a six-pack that nobody will see until you get rid of the gut. Cardio — swimming, running, biking, etc., will get to work burning off the carbs in the beer. Going for a run to work up a sweat an hour before you go out will also jump-start your metabolism and take care of some of the beer before it even reaches your gut.
When I drink light beer I usually just end up drinking more of it, so I'm not convinced that helps.
Finally, the beer belly thing is only sort-of a myth. The problem is consuming a lot of calories at night, generally right before going to bed. Getting a late-night workout after you go out (getting lucky works) will help get rid of the booze belly, too.

Any exercise that works your abs will help.

      - Do sit-ups and crunches, and do them to the sides to work your obliques (love handles).
      - You can also lay flat on your back and keep your legs straight and raise your feet about 6 inches off the ground, and hold it for about 2 minutes at a time.
      - You can work your abs by getting in "push-up" position, but then resting on your elbows and just keep your back straight. If you're doing it right, you'll feel it in your abs.
      - Running, biking, and swimming are all good things that will burn fat in general and will help with your abs.

Good luck. As Mayor mentioned, a big part of limiting your calorie intake is by not eating those fatty foods while drinking late at night. That'll contribute more to your gut than the beer itself.
