Breastfeeding and starting rice cereal?

October 6th, 2008 · 7 Comments

My son is 3.5 months and his doctor said we could start rice cereal at 4 months. But I just realized that I have to mix the cereal with milk. The problem is, I hate pumping. Can I pump just a little milk or will I need to pump a lot? Can I mix rice cereal with anything else so that I can avoid pumping?

      Your doctor has out-dated advice.

“Unfortunately, many health care providers are not up to date in what they’re telling parents, and many, many books are not up to date.

The following organizations recommend that all babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or any other foods) for the first 6 months of life (not the first 4-6 months):

      World Health Organization
      UNICEF
US Department of Health & Human Services
      American Academy of Pediatrics
      American Academy of Family Physicians
      American Dietetic Association
Australian National Health and Medical Research Council
Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
      Health Canada”

When you first start solid feeding you only have to pump a very small amount. He’ll should only take a spoonful or two the first couple times(so he doesn’t get a tummy ache). I’m not a fan of pumping either myself, and I started mixing my daughters cereal with nursery water once she was a little older and she did just fine. Good luck!

Yes, technically you could mix it with water or you could just hand express a bit to mix in it. BTW, since your son is BF you do not need to offer cereal, he gets enough iron from you. If you wanted to wait until around 6 months you could just start out with fruits and veggies, no need for cereal - just empty calories anyway…

Hand express your milk into a cup.

It will say on the box, most can be mixed with breastmilk or formula, but if you dont like pumping you could just hand express the milk into the bowl. You dont need a lot they dont eat very much at first, but you will need to make it soupy rather than thick at first.
GL its SO fun, I gave it to my baby for the first time last week :)

I always used formula out of a carton for mixing with the baby cereals, it didn’t affect my milk production and they don’t have much rice to start of with so benefited from the breast still!

You don’t need to pump much. 1 oz should be sufficient. Technically, you could mix it with water but your son probably won’t be as interested in it.
