Yes, it’s normal to leak some. Some women do; some don’t. Many women don’t leak at all (me) and my colostrum/milk came in just fine. A few weeks before birth I did notice that if I squeezed my nipples that a little thick colostrum would ooze out.

It is normal to leak off and on. Breast pads make the leaking a little less noticeable to others. The colostrum is the first that comes in after birth. It usually lasts a couple of days before the full milk comes in. Some women do not have enough milk to breast feed, but the lactation specialist will have some tips if that is a problem.

    Congrats on your upcoming baby!

I didn’t leak at all during pregnancy. Once the baby was born, the colostrum just came in. My baby was born on a Wednesday morning and my milk didn’t come in until Sunday evening, so that took a long time. The poor baby kept on crying for more food on Friday and Saturday, because the colostrum wasn’t filling her up any more after the first few days. So the nurses suggested I supplement with formula until my milk came in. I wasn’t too happy about this, because I wanted to breastfeed exclusively and not get the baby confused. But I also didn’t want our baby girl to be hungry. So we supplemented for a few days. Once my milk came in, I had plenty of supply and haven’t had to supplement since. She’s now 7 months and I still breastfeed.
    Good luck!

Colustrum leaks intermittently throughout pregnancy. As you get closer to your due date, you’ll notice it more frequently.

One thing that stimulates colostrum regularly for me is taking a hot shower. After letting the hot water run over my breasts for a few minutes I squeeze the areaola and nipple and usually see some. Sexual excitement tends to produce colostrum as well.

The first few days you’ll nurse about every two hours…it will only be colostrum, but it will be enough. Real milk comes in around day 4 normally.

Don’t sweat it and ask for help in the hospital.
