I don’t understand the percentages in liquor. Triple sec says to have a percentage of 21 to 40 and when I try to see the percentages of vodka the searches gives it to me in volume. Which they say is 5% per volume. I guess there really was a need for all those math classes I hated if I want to know my alcohol :). Anyway, if you have a drink like kamikaze’s are you really having two drinks in one or one and a half or still just one? Hope that made sense. Thanks

Triple sec is generally 60 proof, while vodka, bourbon and other spirits are typically 80 proof. That’s 30% and 40%.

Proof = percentage of alcohol X 2. ie- Vodka is 40% alc. making it 80 proof.

Most if not all liquors will give you a proof. The proof is double the actual percent of alcohol per volume. ex. Triple sec is 60 proof which means it is like 30% alcohol by volume. The volume is always the same so a drink like 151 which happens to be 151 proof (nasty stuff) is 75.5% alcohol, that’ll burn for a while. If you see a bottle of beer has 5% alcohol per volume(bud light) it is 10 proof. You can take a 16 oz bottle of bud light at 5% alcohol which would be the same as about 2.5oz triple sec (60 proof) with 13.5 oz of orange juice it would be the same amount of alcohol. To answer about the kamikaze it just depends how much liquor is in it and what proof it is, which varies depending on brand and who pours

Okay:
there are two ways to measure the alcohol content of a beverage. One is percent alcohol by volume, and the other is proof. Proof, in the USA in double the percent abv, so 50pct abv=100 proof. Proof actually has no legal status, and even bottles that state the proof prominently somewhere must also have the equivalent percent abv marked nearby.
Triple Sec, like most flavored liqueurs, is 30pct abv. Vodka is usually 40pct for unflavored, and 35pct for flavored varieties (I think teh 5pct figure is for something like Smirnoff Ice, which is more like a beer than a vodka).
A “normal” Kamikaze is about two drinks in one, since it contains a shot of vodka and a shot of triple sec, but depending on the bar you’re served at you may get more or less of one or the other.
To put it another way, two shots of 40pct vodka by themselves will have 24mL of pure alcohol in them, whereas a shot of vodka and a shot of triple sec will have 20mL total. Not a huge difference.
