How do you enable the * and # keys on a LG Chocolate for Verizon?

I just got this phone as a replacement. It is not brand new, I got it from somebody used, however, everything else about it seems to work perfectly. I just cant use the * or # buttons for some reason. And I need to press *228 to activate the phone. Am I missing something? I have a feeling this is just a silly setting. Thanks.
