How do you make the perfect hard boiled egg?

September 27th, 2008 · 7 Comments

What do you say? I put the egg into water in a small pot, bring the water to a hard boil, cover the pot, remove it from the heat, and let it sit for ten or more minutes. This cooks the egg fine, but about ten percent of the time, this method produces an egg that I can’t shell–that is, the shell won’t separate from the membrane and white. Just wondering what you all do.

Place the egg in a pot and set to high. Once the egg starts to come to the surface (float) it is done.

I have never made an egg that wasn’t perfect; I follow my grandmothers instruction on how to make the perfect boiled egg.

You want enough water to sumberge the egg(s), I usually cook 4 at a time. Then, you put the burner on medium-high heat and wait for a boil. Allow it to continue boiling for one minute, then turn the burner of completely. You then cover the pot with a lid and leave the pot covered with the lid for 15 minutes. Next, dump the hot water (but be careful),.. what I usually do (since you can’t use a strainer for hard boiled egg) is that I submerge the hot water with cold water and place an ice cube to help chill them really quicky……… Once the entire pot of water turns chill (which is usually only a matter of 1-3 minutes), you can then begin peeling. I’ve never had an issue with peeling or eating; my eggs are always great.

You have the right method, but your eggs are too fresh. This is one time you want to use an older egg, at least 1 week old. As it ages it absorbs air and forms an air space between the membrane and the shell, making it easier to peel.
Also add some salt to the water you boil them in, that helps too, as well as cooling them quickly.

Put the egg in pan and add warm water, bring to a boil and boil for 10 min. Done. Crack the shell and peel. If you have a hard time just rinse under cool water to get the shell pieces off.
