How does the egg analogy explain the Trinity?

July 28th, 2008 · 14 Comments

I often hear Christians cite the egg analogy to explain the Trinity.

I get that the shell, white, and yoke are all parts of ONE egg, but they are all SEPARATE parts of one egg.

I thought each person in the Trinity was supposed to be fully God. How does that fit with the egg analogy?

Not trying to attack or anything, but this never really made sense to me.
Mom2ThreeAngels,

you said, "Stop trying to think of it as seperated the point is to think of it together."

But the shell and the yoke ARE separate? Why can't I think of them as separate if they ARE separate?

If Jesus is the yoke, and the egg is God, that means Jesus is not God because the yoke is not the egg. This seems to contradict the Christian notion of the Trinity, doesn't it?

It's yet another lame attempt at trying to explain something not even they know the meaning of….

Late breaking news, Xtians: The egg shell, yolk and white are THREE DIFFERENT things, even chemically different….

Newsflash: "….Stop trying to think of it as seperated the point is to think of it together. 3 parts make up a whole….."

Because without one part it is not an egg it is either a yolk a white or a shell. it takes all 3 to make it whole to make it an egg. Stop trying to think of it as seperated the point is to think of it together. 3 parts make up a whole. Hope this helps :)
      "Mom2ThreeAngels,

The shell and the white and the yolk are 3 things that make up ONE thing an egg. If you have no yolk you don't have a whole egg, if you don't have the shell you don't have the whole egg. You only have the WHOLE egg when you have the yolk shell and white. Without one you don't have the whole.
They are ALL a part of the egg. Father Son and Spirit are all ONE being with 3 functions. I feel like I am confusing you more.. I am sorry for that I meant an egg yolk is not an "egg" a shell is not an "egg" a piece of God is not "God" it takes all 3 working together. It is hard for our human minds to wrap around because we think of things in a physical sense. God is Spirit not a person. Sorry if I made it worse for you :(

The trinity concept is not biblical, it was a theory created by man at the council of Nicea and was voted upon. It was not inspired. I'm LDS and we believe that God, Christ and the Holy Ghost are 3 separate beings who are one in purpose. Which is what Christ explained. If you look through the Bible there are tons of things that bring the trinity into question. Why would Christ talk to himself? How could he be filled with the spirit? etc.

Okay, I never heard this analogy before, but I guess it explains Easter. The only thing I don't get is where they got the rabbit from. Is he supposed to be Satan, or something? Like that creepy bunny from Donnie Darko?

the egg analogy is downright awful. you would think it would be blasphemous to compare something all-powerful to an egg.

in any case, the analogy fails miserable because the parts of an egg do not have the same correlation to each other as the three parts of the trinity do. each part of an egg is not independent or even considered alive. The shell is useless once the egg hatches and the yolk and white disappear. in fact, only the yolk would typically end up being a sentient living being with the other two being byproducts with temporary function.

According to "Mom" wouldn't that make each entity in the trinity a fraction of God?

Yeah, doesn't make sense to me either (why I'm Muslim!) but I guess it's something they have faith in.

The egg analogy works for some to understand, if not for you try this it might help.

A man can be a son to his parents
      A husband to his wife
      A father to his children

Yet he is the same person with three different functions.

What you are missing about the egg is….
You stated they are all parts of one egg..which is correct
but it has to have, three parts to make it an egg
Now, the egg has three separate parts "which can function independent of each other."
Shell…used as the covering for the other two
White.. to use in a receipt that calls for the white of an egg
Yoke…to use in a receipt that calls for the yoke
"One Egg" can have three functions…Which the one single egg does, it is One Egg that can serve three different Functions.

      Hope this has helped.
God bless and ask God to reveal this understanding to you.

WeAreAll…This is just trying to help someone understand, the same as with any other scripture or teaching about God
it is not an insult to God. We are suppose to help those that don't understand the best we can.
The Egg anlogy is just pointing out "One can actually be Three with other parts to it."
The Egg is not presenting God..it is just trying to get you to understand 3 parts can make a whole.
Also, Jesus even used examples to explain things.

The trinity is pagan in it's origins and has nothing to do with truth in the least …. Am i the same being as my father who created me or am i my own separate being … Am i my Father at the same time i am me …… How sick mankind has become ….. Jesus never said he was his Father in heaven …. If you were God himself would you let yourself be born here , die then raise yourself from the dead even though you are dead …. Their logic is explainable only to themselves for in the understanding of it lies madness itself ….. Satan could never have hoped for a better outcome to his nonsense in the Garden of Eden….. The final outcome comes soon enough and we shall see what The father himself thinks of fools who have made his son God over him….. Remember Lots wife , the look on their faces will be the same when truth sets in and can no longer be ignored……….

The word "trinity" is not found in the Bible, but the concept is. All cults deny the Trinity. Christians claim it is true. But, what is it? Is it an office held by three gods (Mormonism) or a pagan concept borrowed from ancient cults (as the Jehovah's Witnesses teach)? The Oneness Pentecostal believers teach that God is not a Trinity but is really one person who takes three forms. So, which of these is true? None.

The Trinity is the doctrine that there is only one God in all creation, all time, and all places. This one God exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person is not the same person as the other, yet there are not three gods, but one.

The Bible has many references to a plurality concerning the nature of God's existence. Consider the following verses as an example: Gen. 19:24, "Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven." Notice that the Lord rained FROM the Lord out of heaven. Amos 4:10-11 says, "I sent a plague among you after the manner of Egypt; I slew your young men by the sword along with your captured horses, And I made the stench of your camp rise up in your nostrils; Yet you have not returned to Me, declares the Lord [YHWH]. 11I overthrew you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, And you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze; Yet you have not returned to Me, declares the Lord." Notice here that the Lord is talking and says, "I overthrew you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah." Sometimes when I show these verses to Jehovah's Witnesses (without saying anything else), they often respond with, "Are you trying to show me the Trinity?" I then say, "You got the Trinity out of that? Wow!"

In the New Testament there are several verses that show God's plurality. Here 's two. Matt. 28:19, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit," Note that there is one name and three persons. Also, 2 Cor. 13:14, "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all." These kinds of verses, and others (see http://www.carm.org/doctrine/trinityplural.htm for more) are part of the means by which the doctrine of the Trinity is derived.

When we "theologians" use the word "person," we are not saying that God is three individual beings walking around who are actually one being. That would be a contradiction. Instead, we define a person as having self awareness, identity, can speak, love, grieve, etc. These are attributes of personhood and we see all of these attributes, and more, in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If you want to see a chart that exemplifies this, go to http://www.carm.org/doctrine/trinity.htm and look around.

The Trinity is a very important doctrine within Christianity. It is the correct view of the Godhead and needs to be affirmed by Christians. Of course, the cults deny the Trinity, often misrepresent it as teaching three gods, or that it is an office, etc. But the truth is that the Trinity doctrine is derived from Scripture and is unique to Christianity.

Finally, the Trinity is important because only in the doctrine of the Trinity can we have the true incarnation of God (the Word become flesh as the Son - John 1:1,14). Only the God-man Jesus can offer a sacrifice sufficient to appease the infinite Father in heaven. No mere man can do this. No mere angel. Instead, God the Word, in His grace, added to Himself human nature (Phil. 2:5-8) in order to bear our sins in His body on the cross (1 Pet. 2:24) so that He might become sin on our behalf (2 Cor. 5:21). This way, He atoned for our sins by the shedding of His blood (Heb. 9:22) and guaranteed that all who trust in Him will receive everlasting life (John 3:16). Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we might then have eternal life that is received by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8). Amen to that!
