my father just got a rotisserie for his grill, but has never made chicken. He is not sure how long to leave it on or if there is a special way to prepare it.

It depends if you want to grill or bake it on the gas grill. For grilling it I usually do about 5 min. per side if it's boneless chicken that's thawed. My kids like it when I put Italian dressing on it before it's cooked.

Cook it until it is done. Every grill is different. Prepare it however you like, salt and pepper, marinade, etc.

stuff celery, onions, garlic and whatever else sounds good to you, in the cavity. Rub a combination of spices all over the outside I would use a cajun or blackening seasoning or just s&p and some poultry seasoning. Don't forget to tie the legs down(they will eventually fall off if you do not). Set your grill for about 325º-375º depending on ambient temp and wind. If you do not have a thermometer than just guess about med to med high for about 1.5-2.25 hours depending on the size of the chicken and conditions. You should have the internal temp of the bird up to 160º in the breast and up to 175º-180º for thighs.
