how many fish can i have in my tank?
November 7th, 2008 · 9 Comments
i have a tank 24in by 12in by 12in (56.7 litres) and have been looking at fish and wanted to just put it past you all to see whether you think it will be too much and whether some of these fish shouldn’t be mixed. none of these fish are very big and im prepared i might need to get a bigger fish tank as they grow, the only fish with really any size was the silver sharks and the pangusius which is a bit bigger than the others and wanted to post this message just in case they might start eating each other or bullying eachother or just dieing because they all need different conditions. if there are any others which you think would get on well with some of those please let me know, i do know that clown loachs get on well with tiger barbs. thankyou
3 figure 8 puffer fish
6 mixed male and female guppies
5 tiger barbs and 5 green tiger barbs
10 neon tetra sim
3 pangasius (catfish)
3 silver sharks

looks a bit over stocked and silver sharks will get big
and the guppies will breed and they will be doubled within 3 months

Dont bother with the figure 8s. Your tank is too small for even one I believe.
The guppies would work perfect. Maybe cut back on the males though, usually you want about 3 females for every male you have. You could have probably 10-15 guppies in that tank safely.
The tiger and green barbs should work. Might want to cut back the numbers a little bit though.
Neons will be perfect, then you could get some cory catfish for the bottom if you wanted.
Pangassius, no. My god no. lmao.

These lunkers get about 3 feet long. That just wouldnt work. Youd need a few hundred gallons to keep one.
If by silver sharks you mean bala sharks. No. They are actually a schooling minnow that gets around 12 inches long.

And clown loaches also get too large. Clown loaches easily live 10 years if they are cared for properly, and will grow to be a little over a foot long.
Mmm. Wait a minute, you are putting these all in the 14 gallon tank? This is a horrible idea. Any puffer fish needs a species only tank. They nip fins and will probably kill and eat smaller fish. They will probably rip your neons to pieces. Oh, and the guppies wouldnt last very long either. The Pangassius, no, not even in that small tank. He will eat your neons and guppies if the puffer didnt beat him to it. They get too large to keep. They really shouldnt be in the aquarium trade. People buy them at 2 and 3 inches, but they dont understand that these things grow to 36 inches pretty easy. You would need at the very least a 200 gallon aquarium for them. But they would enjoy more along the lines of a 500 gallon.
The bala sharks, should not be put in there. They are schooling, so would need like 6 of them, and they get a foot long. So youd need around 100 gallons to fit 6 of them in there. Might need more actually.

all those together are way too much for a 56 litre tank. Figure eight puffers need to be in a brackish tank and are highly agressive, best kept in a species tank, so scratch those. Guppies will be a good, hardy community fish but if you have males and females (especially 3 pairs) you’re going to have a million fish in there in a couple months, they breed like crazy, so only go for one sex or mabey just one pair. 10 tigers would be too much for the tank, they do need to be in groups of 5 or more but I wouldnt have more than 6 in a tank that size, mabey none at all, especially with the guppies. If kept in few numbers they get “nippy”, especially with fish that have long flowing fins (like guppies), in a school they’d be ok but you never know, it may be too much temptation for one one of them. Tetras would be perfect. If you’re talking about Pangasius hypophthalmus (usually just called pangasius cat) they need well over 1000 litre tank, and get to be 120-130cm. Silver sharks, I guess you mean bala sharks are another no no, they get fairly large and need to be in groups. Hope this helps

Straight back to the drawing board! There's no way that mix would work.
The F8's are brackish fish and nippy, they are not community fish.
Those guppies will reproduce and reproduce and reproduce.
The Tiger Barbs need more like 120 litres and are again very nippy, they'd have those guppies for breakfast.
The Silver Sharks need to be in groups of 4-5 or more and a 6ft tank minimum even when small. Never by with view to upgrade, not fair and can stunt the fish. The Clown Loaches have similar requirements to Silver/Bala Sharks in that they prefer this far larger tank, at least a 6footer, and will live an exceptionally long time and should get a good 12", and again, need to be in a group of 4-5 or more.
Pangasius shouldn't be in the pet trade, that's a 3ft long FISH, that needs at least an 8ftx2-3ftx2-3ft tank. Its a monster and shouldn't be generally available.
The Neons would be ok, but would prefer larger again.
Definitely think again!
Your tank is classed as small. (FYI, around 15 US gallons). Stick with fish that stay small. Only stock fish that can live in that size tank their WHOLE lives. Never buy baby monster fish for small tanks - you cannot see into the future and pet stores will often refuse overgrown fish when you cannot afford a larger tank, especially monsters like Balas and Pangasius.
So in your 15 instead you could have say 6-7 neon tetras, a pair of honey gourami and 4 corydoras such as aeneus or sterbai on a sand substrate with some nice plants. This would be a contented tank that wouldn't need upgrading.

Too many fish. Plus a number of the ones you picked will get way to large for the average fish hobbyist. Guppies are fine, but when paired with barbs they tend to get picked on and their tails nipped off. Silver sharks get big, so do pangasius. Clown loaches get huge. Even for my 75gal they outgrew! Also check to be sure the PH level for each fish is the same, as well as salinity and water temp.
Maybe start out with only the barbs and tetras. (but only 15 total fish). Some sort of mini-pleco like a rubber lip for bottom feeding.
Or just the guppies and tetras with a small pleco.
Also have you looked into just a few gouramis? They are colorful, and swim in the middle.
You want a tank that has a few fish at each level…top swimmers, middle, and bottom feeders. That way its more interesting to look at. Your tank is pretty small, so good quality filtration is a must. Even with the so called ‘algae eaters’ you will still need to do some cleaning.

the puffers are brackish not freshwater so NO
the barbs will nip the guppies tails to pieces
the silver sharks need minimum schools of 6 and a minimum tank size of 264 litres plus they would also eat the guppies and tetras
the pangasius catfish grow up to 4 feet and need a very very minimum of 1135 litres and will eventually eat the tetras and guppies
in that tank you could have
10 tetras
or
10 guppies
or
6 tetras and 4 guppies
or
7 tiger barbs

Your tank is way too small for all of these fish……especially silver sharks and pangasius. Both get over 12 inces long. Eventhough it takes a while for them to grow, they still need lots of open swimming space as juveniles. FYI- Clown loaches get over a foot as well.
Figure 8’s do not make good tank mates even with other Figure 8’s or much larger fish. There is always exceptions, but the odds on favorite is that the most dominate figure 8 will terrorize and/ or kill “Anything” else in the tank.
The remaining 26 fish would be cramped as well. I’d say start with the neons and Guppies. Or upgrade to at least a 55 gallon.
In any event, remember to slowly stock your “Properly” cycled tank. Don’t throw all in on the same day.

You would do well to get the neon tetras and build your community around those as like others said, the other species on your list get quite large and are pretty incompatible.
Try a school of neons, a betta, and a few ghost shrimp for variety.

Figure 8 puffers are solitary so need a tank to themselves
Pangassius need a lake, they all get huge and depending on species nearly 10feet and over 600lbs
Silver sharks reach over 1foot so need about a 6×2x2 tank, they are fast active shoaling fish
10 tiger barbs is too much for a little tank like that, they like room to move plus you cant house them with guppies or they fin nip to the extent that they kill the guppies
Your tank is big enough for Either
10 neon tetras or
6 mixed guppy’s
You have a tiny tank, you shouldn’t be stocking anything over 2inches and even then only 10 maybe 12 fish at a push. The stocking you suggested would be ok in my 1350litre tank without the puffers but even then I’d be planning on re-homing the pangassius when they got too big for my tank as its only 7×2x3feet so nowhere near big enough for them
