You need two things:
1) The average volume of a bowl
2) The average number of grains per bowl
1) Since "bowl' is not a standard unit of volume, you'll need to guestimate the volume. Go to your cupboard and find as many different cereal bowls as you can find. Fill them with water and dump them into a measuring pitcher. Use this formula to find the average:
Volume of bowl #1 + volume of bowl # 2 + volume of bowl # 3….. DIVIDED by the number of bowls you used.
2) To get an approximation of the # of grains of rice in a cup, do this:
Find a 1/4 tsp or smaller. Fill it level with rice. Count the # of grains of rice. Do this about 5 times. Use the formula from above:
1st rice grain count + 2nd rice grain count +… 5th rice grain count DIVIDED by 5. This will give you the average # of grains of rice per 1/4 tsp.
Next, fiqure out the # of grains of rice per cup. Use this conversion factor:
48 tsp = 1 cup
Rice will increase approximately 2.5 to 3 times in volume when cooked. For example, when you cook a cup of rice, you'll end up with approximately 3 cups of cooked rice.
Depending on the average volume of the bowl that you found in step 1, it will be easy to figure out how many grains of rice in one bowl.
