It depends on how much steak, how thick it is and how hot you have the fire. Its more of a feel thing. You can always cut it open and see for yourself how well done you like it.
Start with a hot grill, lay the steak down and don't touch it at this point. Leave it alone and don't press on it.
You will do the majority of cooking on one side. Keep an eye on it and look at the sides to see that it is browing and cooking it's way up to the surface. You will see blood forming on top, at this point you can turn it over and finish it. I never time it, but if you want, give it about 2-4 mins. depending on thickness on the first side and about 1-2 mins. on the finishing side.

for medium rare I grill it for about 2 minutes then turn 90 degrees then another 2 minutes then flip over and repeat. turning 90 degrees is the restaurant trick for perfect grill marks. just turn it 4 times and don't play with the steak while its cooking or you will get A LOT of grill marks. add about a minute or so per turn for each level of doneness. so for med-well grill about 4 to 5 minutes and turn.
temperature and time go hand in hand with any type of cooking.
higher temp equals less cooking time and more moisture.
Lower temp means more cooking time and dryer food.
