I have a 4 1/2 month old and my boyfriend and I are starting to feed her the rice cereal. She’s eaten it a few times now and is doing good. But hasn’t had a bowel movement in a few days. The directions on the box is not too clear on exactly how much of what to put in the mixture. We were mixing it with 1 tablespoon rice cereal and 1 scoop formula (1 scoop formula mixed with water makes 2 oz’s in a bottle), and 1 oz. water. My daughter will eat it all, but then sometimes is still hungry. I don’t know if that’s a lot to give her or how much formula to giver her afterwords. Can anybody give me an idea of how much rice cereal and formula and water to mix in one bowl?

First of all they dont need cereal til they are 6 months old, Second rice cereal is very constipating and if she has hadnt a poo in 3 days I would stop that cereal now. It can cause a lot of problems later. If you are going to do it anyways, 1 tbsp of ceral and 1/4 cup of liquid And please dont put it in a bottle

I would feed her 3-4 tablespoons mixed with plain water just to the consistancy of applesauce and let her eat all she wants and then offer her a bottle of formula. She knows when she is full so trust her to let you know. As far as her not having a BM she may be constapated so rub her tummy and give her a drink of straight water between meals/bottles. Hope that helps.

It is perfectly fine to give a 4 1/2 month old baby some cereal. I would suggest mixing her formula as you normally do. Take a couple of teaspoons of the cereal and mix some formula into it. Make it so it is not too thick. She will let you know when she is full. Give her formula to drink afterwards. Rice cereal is the gentlest on a baby’s tummy…this is what most doctors tell you to start with as the baby isn’t so likely to have an allergic reaction to it. I would check with the doctor about the bowel movements. He may have a recommendation as to what to give her.
