How to make fried green tomatoes?

October 28th, 2008 · 6 Comments

I’ve never had them….

I have milk, eggs, and some kind of seasoned flour fry mix (I think its intended for chicken and/or fish but it says that its good for vegetables too)

There aren’t any instructions on the box…
What do I do?

I looked on line, and every place I found said to dip them in milk, then flour, then dip in egg, then breadcrumbs….

Um, I dont have breadcrumbs (or flour)

What can I do with what I have on hand?
Will they still turn out all right?
And how deep do I make the oil?
and how long on each side?

Thanks all.
Thanks all - I discovered that while they are not bad, I like the breading better than the tomatoes ;)

it doesn’t really matter how much oil you have as long as the tomatoes can be completely submerged, or at least majority submerged. if you don’t have flour or breadcrumbs take some croutons and crush them, toast some bread and ground it up…go to the store and get panko crumbs

THIS IS REGULAR FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

      Ingredients:
      4 to 6 green tomatoes
      salt and pepper
cornmeal—–you can also use flour instead
      bacon grease or vegetable oil
      Preparation:
Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 - 1/2-inch slices. Salt and pepper them to taste. Dip in meal and fry in hot grease or oil about 3 minutes or until golden on bottom. Gently turn and fry the other side. Serve as a side dish - delicious with breakfast!

      OVEN FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

      Ingredients:
4 to 6 green tomatoes, cut in 1/4-inch thick slices
      2 eggs, beaten
      2/3 cup evaporated milk
      1/3 cup water
      salt and pepper
      1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
      Preparation:
Sprinkle tomato slices with salt and pepper on both sides. In a shallow bowl mix beaten eggs, milk, and water. Put the all-purpose flour in a shallow bowl. Dip each slice into egg mixture, then into flour.* Dip each slice into egg and then into the flour again. Arrange tomatoes in large, shallow, greased baking pans, or bake in 1 pan, in batches. Tomatoes should not touch. Bake uncovered in 400° oven 20 minutes, turning halfway through.
For crunchier coating, dip slices the second time into egg mixture then into seasoned bread crumbs or corn flake crumbs, with a little Parmesan cheese, if desired

      Fried Green Tomatoes.
      4 green tomatoes, thickly sliced
      - 1/2 cup all purpose flour
      - 1/4 cup yellow cornmeal
      - 1 egg
      - 1/3 cup milk
      Salt and pepper, to taste
      Oil, for frying
      Preheat oven to 200ºF.
Mix flour, corn meal, salt and pepper in a small bowl. In a separate bowl, beat egg and milk until combined.
Place a frying pan over medium heat. Add enough oil to the pan to cover the bottom 1/4″ inch deep. (If using an electric frying pan, heat the oil to 350ºF to 375ºF.)
Dip sliced tomato into egg mixture covering both sides; then dip sliced tomato into flour mixture covering both sides.
Place prepared tomato into preheated frying pan. Cook each side of the tomato until golden brown and crusty. Keep fried tomatoes in preheated oven until ready to serve.

You could try doing with the seasoned flour, there is no reason why that wouldn’t work, but you may be disappointed.

We grew tomatoes in our garden all the time when I was little & how we fried them was cut them into slices then dip them in milk or water then dip them in to cornbread mix then back in the water or milk & back into the cornbread mix then put them in a pre-heated skillet with a little oil in it. Fry them on med-high for 30 secs to a minute or until they start to turn brown on one side then flip. When they are browned on both sides then take them out & set them on a plate with a napkin on it to soak up the extra grease. You can do it with flour I guess anything to make a batter. I hope this helps! Good Luck :)

NO NO NO, ignore all that! Lets go southern style here. I make these all the time, I love them. It’s a simple, yet yummy recipe. Ok first beat an egg (two if your doing lots of tomatoes) Then pour about 1/3 of a cup into the milk. Put a cup and a half of cornmeal in a separate bowl. Dip sliced tomatoes into egg/milk mixture, then dip into cornmeal. Fry on medium heat until golden brown. YUMMY! Now I’m wanting me some fried green maters. Hope you enjoy!
