I have heard that folks up north do not have real Mexican food in your restaurants! Perhaps Taco Bell. But?

that is not real Mexican food. Now, understand, that those of us in Texas like what we call Tex-Mex. It is the Texas take on traditional Mexican food. How can you live in a place with no good Tex-Mex?

No one in the US eats what Mexicans would call Mexican food, we eat Texas-Mexican, and that's all through out the US pretty much.

There's great authentic Mexican in Michigan. Several ma and pa places dotted all around. Not tex-mex either. The real deal.

There is great Mexican food all over Los Angeles. You just have to find the mom and pop stores to get the good stuff. I usually make my own. Besides, I don't like Tex-Mex I like the original Mexican food not any twists on it. It's not hard to find Mexican food where I live. I cook alot of it myself, Pozole, sopes, Birria, Tamales, Lichon, Chile Verde, Mole, etc.

I live up North in Massachusetts and I survive without Tex-Mex….I've never had it. We havd Taco Bell around here, but I'm sure that is not real Mexican food anyway. There are some local restaurants around here especially around Boston which have been started by immigrants from mexico and Latin America, which are really good and not like Taco Bell. But my mom makes tacos at home and we make these taco salad bowls which are good. I guess if you never try it, you don't know what you're missing.

here in the mountain states we do have authentic mexican food, many people who came here first as migrant workers have stayed ,naturalized and raised families.many have introduced their communities to authentic Mexican cusine.
of course we have Taco Bells and Taco johns in our bigger towns ,even some upscale places like El Jarros and Rosita,s which cater to richer people and tend to be more tex mex. but scattered around like precious little jewels are these mom and pop ,family run places that people go out of their way to visit.
and then we have these wonderfull women who cook in their homes and share with the community by selling their stuff to the local markets.authentic sauces ,homemade cheeses, and salsas,or like Roza who puts up posters announcing she is going to make a big batch of albonigas or tamales and people call ahead to reserve their orders.
our community has such a large number of mexican americans that we have a mexican store.it,s an awesome place to shop .I love the spices, they dont come in little bottles but in 1/2 pound bags.
I suppose like your Tex Mex we have our own take on alot of mexican foods,I took a recipe for enchiladas taught to me by a really wonderfull cook and turned it into my own creation .I use a lot of mexican ingrediants and spices in my cooking to change up old recipes. most of our cafe,s serve a breakfast burrito that the only thing mex.about it is the tortilla.LOL
but thats the wonderfull thing about food isnt it? and about cultures, they can mix and become something new and wonderfull.

Just because you have Mexicans working in a Mexican restaurant, doesn't mean they are making real Mexican food. I had friends while I was forced to live in South Carolina (the desert of Mexican food) who were both Mexican and worked in their family owned Mexican restaurant. I hated the food in their restaurant, and was surprised that they served this horrible crap. So when they invited me over for a tamale day, I was hesitant. I went anyways, and besides tamales, they had many excellent entrees! It was just like home (California)! So I said, "Why don't you serve this in your restaurant?" and they said:
"We did, but the South Carolina gringos didn't like it"
