It really depends on the wine. Some will age pretty well and some won't. For any wines that have a cork, you will want to store them laying down in a wine rack, not sitting upright on display, otherwise the corks will dry out and eventually let air in. You also want to keep all wine bottles away from direct bright light and away from florescent light.

In summary, wine can last a long time, but wine standing upright in the light may start to deteriorate after a few months, especially if it's stored in a hot part of your kitchen (like a high shelf).

Store your wines in a cool dark place. Red wines, depending on the varietal can age. White wines should not age except for some white burgundies and champagnes. The heat of a kitchen will turn your wine to vinegar in time.

keep them in a cool enviroment, out of sunlight. Preferable lying down so the cork stays wet and wont dry out. they keep for years and years. I have some wine i made ten years ago, some i bought is much older than 10 years.still in storage. One bottle is from 1979.

If they are in your kitchen where it gets hot, and standing up, you dont have much time. Try and find a way to store them on their side in the coolest, darkest place in your house. One of my friends keeps his in a closet.
If you do it right, even cheep wines should be fine for about 5-8 years past vintage. After that they dont go bad, just loose their flavor. You should drink most white wines within the first 3 years of the vintage. Dont wory about drinking alone, wine is part of a balanced meal and is not a get-drunk drink. Start having some with dinner. If you find one is bad, just use it for cooking. It always makes food better.
