i want to be a vegetarian?

November 4th, 2008 · 8 Comments

I want to become a vegetarian, but I’m not entirely sure how to go about with it.

I told my mom that I want to be, and she didn’t believe me. So, we did get in a bit of an argument, and now she’s expecting me not to eat any meat/milk/eggs/ anything forever.
That’s not exactly a healthy transition, is it?
I’m 16 by the way. Old enough to decide what I want my life style to be.

Anyway, how should I start? And what are some things I could make for breakfasts, lunches (our school doesn’t offer vegetarian choices), and snacks?

And vegetarians can eat egg whites, right? because that IS what I normally eat for breakfast. That or a fruit smoothie.

do you want to become vegetarian or vegan?

vegetarians eat eggs and milk and stuff, but not meat.

vegans don’t eat anything that comes from animals (chickens-eggs)

here are some sites that should get you started:

if you eat eggs then go with vegetarian because they still drink milk, eat eggs just no meat. this is a big step i think you just start slowly and overtime work your way into it so your body wont get like confused. slow and steady will win the race, or something like that.
    good luck

well if you choose not to eat milk or eggs that is vegan. and just stopping all of them suddenly is PERFECTLY FINE. a lot of people go straight to veganism.

but. if you want to eat eggs, or milk then its a much simpler transition. you won’t crave a million things at once.

if you want to go lacto-ovo vegetarian: no meat, fish, chicken, or seafood, but you do eat eggs and drink milk. -simple transition just abstain from consumption of meats. also gelatin and rennett are good to avoid as well since they come from slaughterhouses.

lacto-vegetarian - cant eat the same meats plus no eggs. or foods made with eggs. such as store bought cakes, treats that contain eggs/egg whites. but you do drink milk still and still avoid gelatin and rennett.

ovo-vegetarian - no meats, plus no dairy, such as cheese, milk, yogurt.. or foods made with milk products such as store bought cakes, candies.. avoid gelatins, rennet (which is typically only in cheeses so thats already avoided) plus whey which is from milk (also milk fat, lactose)

vegan: no meats, no dairy, or eggs or anything made with them. plus no leather (although i think you should avoid it if you are vegetarian too.. ) plus no non food items containing animal ingredients or tested on animals.

(gelatin - grounded up boiled animal bones and cartledge, typically found in yogurts, gooey things like starburst, gummy bears, skittles, pop tart frosting… marshmallows

rennet - cheeses, also caesin is the same thing. also in masterfoods foods, such as their ice cream and candies (SNICKERS, M&M’S) but not listed in the ingredients

taurine - animal bile? in energy drinks, but plant form is used in redbull.)

typically vegetarians are lacto-ovo vegetarians which is okay that you eat egg whites.
check your schools sandwich options. i never knew it but my high school had hummus wraps, which are still the best hummus wraps ive ever had.

Going veg is challenging when the rest of your family doesn’t go with you!

I would suggest you start by eliminating meat (including chicken) and fish. I try to set aside one hour on the weekend to roast veggies and use them all week for wraps, pasta, pizza and sandwiches - red peppers, onions, zucchini, eggplant, squash, carrots, asparagus all taste great roasted in the oven with a drizzle of olive oil and salt/pepper.

Suggestions for non-meat lunches include whole-wheat wraps with hummus, beans and grilled veggies/fresh spinach; pasta with pesto sauce made with basil and spinach (I eat this cold or hot). You could also cook up some brown rice with black beans while roasting the veggies and microwave it with frozen veggies during the week or make burritos by stuffing it into a wrap with some cheese and veggies and enchilada sauce.

For snacks there’s the old stand by peanut butter or small bags of nuts for snacks, hummus on crackers, pretzels. Sweet potatoes can be microwaved for a quick, filling and yummy snack. You can also make a big pot of meatless chili and freeze it in small batches.

I am finding lots of motivation for eliminating meat and overall good healthy habits on http://www.lose-weight-for-life.com. Good luck!

There are different kinds of vegetarians. Some of us do not eat any dairy or eggs in addition to not eating meat. It is possible, and quite yummy.

See the “Meal Plans” tab in the site below for ideas on what to make for dinner, what to pack for lunch, and what to eat for breakfast.

That is great that you want to become a vegetarian and don’t let your mom get to you, you are mature enough to make a healthy decision.

Vegetarians typically consume dairy products like milk, eggs and cheese etc. Make your mom aware of that.

I would suggest starting by doing a lot of research on the internet. Make a huge list of all of things you like that don’t contain meat, and by searching the web you will discover more than you would expect.

When I was in high school I ate salads without ham and cheese pizza since that was all they had to offer. I usually picked up a piece of fruit and juice or something too. If you have to bring your own lunch, make a veggie wrap or sandwich. There are plenty of things you can put in a wrap that will make it seem just as filling and if you had meat on there. When I was a vegetarian (vegan now) I put ranch, lettuce, pepperjack cheese, avacado, sprouts, onions, tomatoes, peppers and olives on mine. They are so good. I even have meat eater friends that eat them.

For your last question… yes vegetarians eat egg whites. Fruit smoothies are an excellent choice for vegetarians as well.

I have a blog I recently started guiding people through the change if you would like to check it out. Also I know a couple of other good sites as well. Hope this helps!

I did it awhile ago, not to a extreme though. I mainly just cut out the meat. I lost weight doing it though! If you do become a vegetarian one thing it people tend to then go and eat a lot of bread which is not healthy! I would suggest not doing it to a extreme like your mom is being unless that is what you really want. If you do want to cut out all that maybe just start with the meat. There is vegetatian lasagna at the store you can get which I actually prefer to this day. You can eat fruit for breakfast. Salads would also be a good choice.
