coat it in BBQ sauce, then grill it, how will turn out? I want to do a simple marinade to add flavor and keep the moisture in. I'm doing chicken legs so it shouldn't get too dried out like breast meat would - do I need marinade? I was thinking my dad did this combo before, but I'm not sure and don't want to ask as I'm doing this as a surprise Father's Day lunch. Will the Italian dressing make the chicken too slippery to add BBQ sauce? Should I put it on the grill straight after the marinade, then add the BBQ later as it's grilling.

I'd put the BBQ sauce on while grilling and also have a little on the side. Sounds great! I personally like soaking my chicken in orange juice before grilling.

BBQ — AND — Italian dressing??
thats a bit much.
One or the other, not both.

it might not taste so great. try doing the dressing and the sauce separately.

I would say marinade in Italian dressing and then grill so that the chicken soaks up the flavor of the dressing and then add the BBQ sauce. Doing them together will make a strange coating on the chicken.

1 part italian dressing, 1/2 part soy sauce, then grill after marinading. Do not BBQ sauce until the chicken is done cooking.

Someone on here suggested the Italian dressing, and I tried it and it was the BLANDEST chicken I'd ever tasted! Also, there's too much oil in salad dressing, and it will catch fire on the grill…….. You don't want to use BBQ sauce on the chicken on the grill, because it will burn…. you just add it the last 5 min. or so. I do a dry rub on the chicken (seasoned salt, garlic powder, oregano, pepper & chili powder); and then add the BBQ sauce at the end. With the skin on, it should stay moist (if it were skinless, white meat pieces, you might want to marinade it - I like A-1 Texas Mesquite Marinade)……..

Personally I think the tastes of Italian and BBQ would be conflicting but I have never tried it so maybe it would be good. Since you aren't sure yourself and this is for a special day then choose one or the other.
Another option is to buy a packet of GrillMates marinade packets. They come in many flavors and are very simple and very tasty. Cook over a med low heat grill for 50 minutes to an hour for moist yummy chicken!

chicken is great marinaded in Italian dressing. It adds a great flavor.
Do your marinade, then grill the chicken until its done. Wait until the last few minutes to brush on the BBQ sauce. This is true whether or not you marinade. BBQ sauce burns to a black crisp if you put it on at the start of grilling, especially for bone-in chicken, where the grilling time is long.

do it the Rachael Ray way, put alittle EVOO on just before you grill and just before it gets done add the BBQ sauce to keep it from burning.Skip the italian dressing marinade.

We've done this before and it's DELICIOUS!!!
Grill the chicken for awhile and then top with the bbq sauce shortly before taking the meat off the grill.

It wont stick because of all the oil in the dressing,I would cook it 1/2 through then add the BBQ sauce in layers to cook onto the chicken.Sounds Yummy……GOOD LUCK!

I have a chicken recipe that you do this with only its browned and then baked.
I make a coating with flour and the dressing. But since you are grilling it I would say put it in the dressing and the coat it with some flour before you put the sauce on it

bbq chicken marinade:
1 pkt McCormick Mesquite flavoring
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup veg oil
marinate overnight to 2 days for most flavor. drain off the marinade so that you don't get flare ups on the fire. Grill on the grill being careful not to burn the outside and have raw insides. If you are having a tough time with this, grill for 4 min on each side and the put in an oven-proof dish, add a few tbsp of water, cover with foil and bake in the oven. Bone-in chicken is tricky on the grill.
You won't NEED to sauce this because this marinade gives great flavor, but if you want to sauce it, once you're sure the chicken is completely cooked, baste with sauce and return to the grill top side down first. Keep an eye on it because the sugar in the bbq sauce will burn if left unattended too long.
I hope your dad appreciates your efforts!

Italian Dressing and BBQ sauce together, not a good combination. Instead, marinade the chicken in the dressing and allow the guests to decide if they want BBQ sauce on the side to dip their meat in or not. You don't want to over-do it.

I think it would be good. I've made this recipe before with the same ingredients, just a different way of doing it. It does not need to be cooked as long as it says or it might dry out. The recipe calls for chicken breasts but I think you could use legs as well.
Zesty Slow Cooker Chicken Barbeque
INGREDIENTS
* 6 frozen skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
* 1 (12 ounce) bottle barbeque sauce
* 1/2 cup Italian salad dressing
* 1/4 cup brown sugar
* 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
DIRECTIONS
1. Place chicken in a slow cooker. In a bowl, mix the barbeque sauce, Italian salad dressing, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour over the chicken.
2. Cover, and cook 3 to 4 hours on High or 6 to 8 hours on Low.

Skip the BBQ sauce and just use the dressing. Italian makes the chicken nice and moist. Just don't cook them on too hot a grill, that'll ruin them.
