I'm a nursing mother. How can I increase my milk production?

Hello,

My daughter is just over three months old. In the last few weeks, I feel as though my milk production has decreased. I have also started exercising - 45 to 50 min of cardio daily. Could this be the culprit? Does anyone have any advice on how I can "beef up" milk production? I already feel as though I am nursing round the clock and I'm drinking plenty of fluids. Thank you.

definitely - that much cardio each and every day is overtaxing your system even if you're not nursing. you're supposed to take a day off every three days to give time for repair and recuperation.

Yeah that much exercising will effect your supply. You can safely do that every other day and it shouldn't effect anything and you'll get similar results it will just take a little longer.

Make sure you're drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day and stay away from caffine that includes chocolate.

there are herbal remedies that will boost your supply like fengreek and some teas that will help too. Go to a health food store adn they can give you some good reccommendations.

Other than nursing and pumping more I don't know what else will help.

      Good luck!

i would only do the cardio every other day. you can try the following things to increase your milk supply:
-pump for 10-15 minutes on each side after nursing
      -eat oatmeal everyday
      -take fenugreek pills
      -drink 'mother's milk tea'
      -take 'more milk plus'
-drink a very dark beer at night after baby goes to bed

      good luck!

I agree with the other poster, make sure you are getting your rest - it's taxing on your system to feed all day plus all of that cardio. Also, nurse often which you said you are already doing, if you need to you could pump to store for when you may need to give a bottle. Short sessions of pumping will help but you could run into oversupply which sounds like a good idea but trust me it's not! I've heard oatmeal helps increase your milk and there are teas too - haven't tried so not sure if they work.

On a side note - my baby is also just over 3 months and I recently have noticed a slight downturn in production. I've read that around 3 months your body is in better tune with how much your baby needs and it could be that before you were overproducing - I was way overproducing. My breasts have also decreased in size due to more preg weight loss - maybe you are experiencing this too?

I know its not what you want to hear but EXPRESS! Even a little bit every so often. Add each expression to a bottle, keep it refridgerated and freeze it in a bag at the end of the night. That way your levels increase and theres a storage in the freezer for when you get a night out with the girls. Everyones a winner!!

well i was in the same position as you when my son was first born but i thought i wasnt producing enopugh but i was wrong as long as your baby is getting satisfied and not crying all the time besides for ohter stuff she or he is gettin enough milk. but if you want you can get a pump and pump 10 mins on each side like every 5 hours but make sure your baby eats first. that will help you produce more. good luck and i hope everything works out best wishes. oh yeah exercising shouldnt hurt anyhting if your only doing it for atleast an hour.

I am using an electric breast pump 3 times a day 10-15 minutes per breast. This can help with your milk supply. Also you can use fenugreek seeds and grind them into a powder. Take the fenugreek powder with water 3 times a day and you will see a great difference in your milk supply. I take this powder everyday and it has increased my milk supply and pumping. I don't think cardio makes any difference to ur milk supply. Good luck.

Are you sure that your supply is actually decreasing? I thought this because I wasn't able to pump as much and my breast didn't feel as full, much to my surprise neither of these are indicators of low supply. My daughter was still getting enough to eat and growing well with out any additional feedings, my body had just regulated to what my daughter's needs actually where. The excercise can be doing it. I work in a hospital and they told me to drink Colt 45 (just a glass or so). It seemed to work. Also I spoke with this Indian woman who said there is a certain type of bean or pea or something that nursing mothers can get here at an Indian market. I forgot the name but maybe you can go to one and ask there. Mothers milk also works.
