I know that in the book they are related by marriage (sisters-in-law). But in the movie, Ninny tells the story of Idgie as if she knows her *very* intimately with details about her that no one else could possibly know. But Idgie wasn't shown to have a sister-in-law or even be close to anyone except Ruth. Plus, at the end, when she and Evelyn are together in Whistle Stop, she has this smile on her face that implies that she is Idgie, right after Evelyn finds a fresh jar of honey sitting on Ruth's grave. Which leads to another question being how would she have time or opportunity to put the jar there if she was with Evelyn the whole time?
I know she was telling the story in the nursing home as if it was someone else but if it was really her story, why wouldn't she say so?

well ive never read the book. but i think it is just a matter of opinion on if ninny and idgie are the same person.
i always thought that ninny and idgie were the same person. i didnt have any doubt in my mind they werent until you asked this question. so honestly i dont think anyone really knows then. the ending is open for interpretation.

it was her and she didn't say that it was her so that it wouldnt let evelen down and to keep it a seceret because of her house and how she couldnt afford to pay it well that was ninney threadgoode's house!

There was a point where Ninny says she was married to her brother.

I think they are the same person. Ninny was at her old house and cemetery before Evelyn got there. She left the nursing home to go home and Evelyn went to find her. That's when she put the honey out.

No, they are not! The book makes it completely clear that they are sisters-in-law, while the movie lets you believe that they're the same person.
