What can you suggest as far as indian food for someone who has never had it? I don't like things that are extremely spicy, I like things that are "light", and I don't mind vegetarian dishes. Also as far as what to drink and good desserts, thanks.

Korma (mild, slight almond flavour), Pasanda (mild, more savoury), Butter Chicken (this is mild-medium) is very nice, you can ask for this mild if its set as medium.
There is a mild fruity curry, usually a Persian or Malaysian or something similar.
On a drier theme Chicken Tikka or Tandoori Chicken are great, Chicken Tikka or Tandoori Masala (a creamy tomato based sauce) is one of my favourites, but most restaurants class this a medium, you can ask for this mild though with little trouble.
It is also good to remember that most restaurants can and will heat up of spice down a dish within reason to customer specifications, which can give more options. Just ask they will be willing to help.
These are good starter dishes in UK Indian restaurant scene, served with pilau rice, and some naan on side if especially hungry.
As far as deserts go, Kulfi (Indian ice cream) is quite nice alternative to a vanilla ice cream, it's made from condensed milk.
If your entertaining from home, most of these can be got at the supermarket.
Suggestion for deserts are usually something light, like ice cream or sorbet.
On drinks suggestion, again keep it light, and not too much. If you want to keep it Indian themed, then Kingfisher is a nice Indian beer

For light dishes, I would suggest any type of biryani. It's made of rice, has some flavor to it, but it's a lighter dish than butter chicken. Butter chicken and naan is really great. Very tasty, but not light. I hope this helps! Also, tikka chicken, or tandoori chicken with naan is lighter, has a little kick, and it's still very good. Try it with raita to calm the spice, or just to see if you like it.
Most restaurants will carry regular sodas, water, and tea. You could try chai. I wouldn't suggest spiced chai though, if you're sensitive to spice. Lassi is really thick, and sweet. Mango lassi is a traditional drink.
As far as desserts go, I would definitely say you should try kulfi. It reminds me of a frozen bananna dipped in chocolate. It's very tasty.
If you do find anything that's too spicy for you, chase it with something creamy and sweet (like lassi, kulfi, or ice cream). This always works for me.
