  It's actually a tuber but is usually called a vegetable.

  tomato
  and bananas are actually herbs

  Potatoes are vegetables, and, like beetroot, carrot, parsnips, turnip, radish, salsify, celeriac, Jerusalem artichokes and kohlrabi they fall into the tuber category.

  Anything that has a seed or stone inside is a fruit.
