Is chocolate bad for all animals? If so, why are humans the only ones who can eat it?

I know that dogs and cats can't eat chocolate but I wonder if any other animal can eat it safely. This question has been eating at me for a while.

Mice can. The reason why Humans are the only ones who can eat it is because of a certain chemical in it that we can only digest. I don't remember the name of the chemical at this moment.

It isn't good for them because of all the caffeine I think. However my dogs (as puppies) went through a lot, from eating and digesting whole socks, to paper towels, to ham, "bad" bones, chocolate, foil, etc. I just think it depends on how strong their bodies are to handle it. That doesn't mean you should try it with your dog.
