OMG! Learn to spell! No, he did not know he would have a monument. That is a really foolish thing to say. He was a man who wrestled with the situations he faced during his life, and he tried to help preserve the Union, knowing that if the country were ever divided, it would mean disaster for all. Did he know he was a great leader? I don’t think he thought of anything like that. He questioned himself daily. He wanted to do the best he could for the country, and even after he made decisions, he still pondered the outcomes.

Do you really think that people really understand the implications and ramifications of their actions at the time they are making the consideration? I don’t think so! He was a very learned and observant man, and he was able to see beyond the immediate problems to try and see what the decision would mean for the future. That is not a person who does anything lightly, or with reluctance. He pondered the consequences pro and con, and then made what he felt was the best outcome for the situation, and yes, he did take into consideration the future of the decision.
