Dogs will crave vegetables and greenery in general. it is VERY common to dogs to eat grass, leaves. etc. there are essential vitamins and minerals in plantae that dogs need, just like we need them. Dogs are primarily carnivores but also do require greens.
Your dog MAY be nutrient difficient, or craving the greens for vitamin and minerals…. Id ask your vet. He also may just be eating these out of nervousness, anxiety, or just as a learned habit. Some dogs pick up and chew big rocks, and can break their teeth on them. Its not that they want to eat the rock, its that they are anxious, or nervous or just plain bored.
It is common to throw the greens back up, especially if too much is ingested.
2 peices of advice, check a list of plants that are harmful or fatal to a dog and make sure he's not eating any of these. and the second is so supplement his diet with a doggy vitamin supplement or with a prepared small bowl of greens mixed with wet or dry dog food… you might find that this cures his problem.
again, consult your vet to figure out whether it's nutrient deficiency or a behavioral thing.

animals usually chew on leaves to clean their mouths… but maybe he's just a little overzealous about it. my cat used to eat these nasty looking lizards and puke afterwards. but learned not to eat that anymore. dogs are… not as smart, but if he pukes enough, he might just stop on his own.

Well I hope he doesn't munch on anything that hurts him. I don't think your dog is stupid, he might just want to eat leaves. It could have something to do with his diet. If you feed him a grocery store brand food, try something new like Natural Balance, Halo, Wellness, Nutro or another healthier food. When animals inner systems seem wacky they will usually try to eat grass so maybe the leaves are his way to tell you his tummy hurts. Good luck.

I would suggest doing an elimination diet for a while (get some raw patties such as natures variety or some other good quality raw food). He may have an allergy, or he may be deficient on fiber. In many cases I have seen the dog is either allergic to something in the food you have or is deficient in something that the food is not providing. If he is trying to ingest it its one thing, if he is just doing it for fun thats another and is a training issue. If he's just doing it for fun, you think, then try setting him up for the act then say "leave it" if he tries to chomp it, correct him (see websites or books on proper correction technique) , then treat him when he leaves it. He'll soon find out that its more fun to leave it than to try and eat it.

he might be lacking something in his diet and feels the plants outdoors are helping. try adding chopped carrots, corn.peas, cabbage or celeray to his food and see if it helps. grass eatting calms their stomachs so they will eat it and throw up anything that does not settle inside to remove bile. my dogs will grab long grass or leaves but not every time they are out. u might want ot consult ur vet and have his blood and thryoid checked checked out to see if there is anything out of whack.he might just have this habit and likes the feel and taste of the plants. good luck

Don't worry. This is a natural way for animals to cleanse themselves. The eat green leaves or some grass and this greenery, while in the stomach twist and churns around the hair balls that are in there. When the dog or cat pukes then the stuff is all expelled. Dog or cat feels better.

I've seen all three of my dogs (one Westie, and two Chihuahua mixes) eating grass out in the yard and occasionally chewing on leaves, and like your dog they usually throw up afterwords. My dad says that they're just cleaning out their stomachs.

He may just like the taste of certain plants. But many are toxic, or could be sprayed with poisons, so it’s usually not a good idea to let him eat plants unless you know whether they’re safe.

Here’s a list of toxic plants:

If the plants aren’t toxic, and they’re in your yard so you know that they haven’t been sprayed with pesticides, then let him graze away!
