I have bought three so far and each time I get one they last no more than a few days. I really need one to keep my fish tank clean. My other fish are fine and I've had them for some time but I just can't keep the plecos alive! HeLP! (I have a 50 gallon tank with 19 fish in it. All fresh water community fish mostly)

look at the size your buying if your buying real small ones say about 1 inch long they don't seem to do as well as ones that are 2 to 3 inches long when you buy them you also may need to feed them some algae waffers to supliment their diet

Pleco's can be hard to get established in a tank. Look for a really fat healthy one that isn't too small. They seem to adjust better if they are a bit bigger. Make sure that they have a place to hide in your tank and really spend the time to acclimate them to your tank before putting them in.

Get a big fat healthy looking one. Is there a chance there might not be enough for them to eat? Maybe you should get some algae wafers and drop one in every other day, just in case.

Check your pH and water hardness and other parameters.

I know many people have difficulty keeping plecos alive, while I think I have only ever had one die (out of 8).

They do seem to be able to adjust to a wide variety of water conditions, but it's possible that the shock of moving to a very different tank is doing the in.

You could also try a different species of pleco. The little bristlenose are very hardy and better suited as algae eaters in a 50gal tank anyway.
