You might be talking about Yucca.

I don't know if I have ever seen them in Mexican food, but oriental cuisine uses water chestnuts. They resemble tiny potatoes.

      Coughed up in the kitchen.

Maybe slices of Jicama, pronounced Hickama?

    • 8 sadie_oyes // Jul 4, 2008

      It's called Jicama (mexican potato)

Most likely they are Plantans..They are usually fried tho. I also think they might be Chick Peas aka Garbanzo beans. Another round potato like thing could be water chestnuts.
From what you described I believe they are Garbanzo beans. Hope this helps!

It's either a potatoe or hominy. Does it taste like corn or potatoe?

    • 11 Kathi // Jul 4, 2008

It could be Jicama which is a dense potato-like vegetable more often in Mexican than "Anglo" dishes, or it could be potatoes!

I hesitate to call Taco Johns a Mexican restaurant exactly, but they even have a burrito with chunks of potato, the Potato OLay or something like that. I've only seen the ads
(Stopped there once out of extreme hunger and had a taco. Was so extremely put off by it that I've never gone back. )

How little? Very little sounds like hominy, which is giant, white corn. Or diced, may be jicama or actually potato.

    • 13 MikeL // Jul 4, 2008

      Hominy or garbanzo beans

    • 14 deble_2000 // Jul 4, 2008

      hominy
