i have been mashing fruits and veggies for my almost 6.5 month old and he tries to chew it (obviously they don't even need chewing)

should i start giving him chunks (cooked) rather than mash them up?

what about toast? he doesn't have teeth yet, would this be too hard to chew?

You can try it. Teeth has nothing to do with it though. Babies chew on their back gums which will not have teeth for awhile. Around 6.5 months Emma was having homemade food that was mashed with a potatoe masher so yes, it was chunky. Also pieces of fruit and veggies, cheerios, rice cakes, etc.

Yeah, teeth don't matter. My 12 month old has no teeth and he's munching just fine…

I don't think that babies that young are supposed to have anything chunky yet. When they are ready for chunks it should be very small, meltable foods like tiny pieces of cheese. I believe what you may be seeing is your baby learning to use his tongue, lips and gums to better affect, rather than just sucking as he's used to. My daughter is exactly the same age and she does this too, but if I try to give her anything chunky, like a tiny piece of fruit, she just spits it out. She doesn't really know how to chew and swallow yet, she's just working her mouth. Ask your doctor if you're not sure.

my son has been eating chuncks for months now and he just got his first tooth about 2 weeks ago!!

Absolutely, it will take him a couple of tries to get used to eating larger chunks, but if you put them in front of him and keep a close eye on him, he'll handle them well.

My 9 month old has been self feeding since 6 months, she never had any purees or mashed foods, she has always eaten chunky, and with her hands, and has never had any problems, she loves her food.
(She still has no teeth, and can chew up anything all the same)

If you have ever stuck your finger in babies mouth you know how hard those gums are. They might as well be teeth.

It is perfectly fine to let him self feed or give him bigger chunks of food. We give my 7 month old toast fingers, Cheerios, apple chunks, steamed broccoli and he does very well with all of them. If you aren't comfortable with that you can give him small cut up pieces of fruit, veggies, and grains. No need for mush.

Yes, if you think he'll like it- give him chunkier foods.
My son Roman started on cooked carrots that I sliced up. He loved them- and didn't need his teeth!
Also, toast would be fine =) His saliva will do most of the work for him! Just make sure that you tear it into pieces for him (obviously.)
Cheerios were Roman's favorite (and still are!) Although, you may want to talk to your pediatrician about them because the box suggests you wait until they're toddlers.
      Good luck!

if he wants to eat it, he probably can. teeth are not really necessary. finger foods are fantastic for him at this age.

count your blessings: my daughter has all her teeth (16mo) and still doesn't chew. makes diapering a real adventure.

My last one was 7 months old and was chewing steak. She had no teeth. Those gums are very strong. Just watch for choking, but you need to do this even when they are older with teeth.
