Recipe for “fake” fish?

November 10th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I need a recipe for fake fish. One with easy to find ingredients would be best because I live more than 70 miles from any sort of specialty store. I have Nori flakes that I bought last time I was at a vegetarian store but have been unable to find a recipe that uses them. Any help from other vegetarians out there? Thanks!

Here’s one for fish sticks - the only ingrediant that might give you any trouble is the kelp:

I’m not sure if you are looking for more of a “fish” filet, but this recipe for
      ‘tuna’ salad is awesome

      1(15 oz.) can chick-peas, drained (or 1.5 c. cooked)
1/8 - 1/4 cup vegan mayonnaise (I agree that the original recipe calls for way too much mayo. I only used about 2 tablespoons (1/8 cup) for mine, so just add it a spoonful at a time until you’ve added however much works for you.)
      1/3 cup minced celery
2.5 Tablespoons minced dill pickle or kosher dill relish (about 1 pickle-slice, give or take)
      1/2 Tablespoon nutritional yeast
      1 green onion, chopped
      1 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon kelp powder or dulse flakes
      pepper, to taste

In a medium bowl, mash the chick-peas coarsely with a fork. Mix in the remaining ingredients. Eat on crackers or on a sandwich.

      Crab Ralph

2-3 cups very ripe (nearly ready to be thrown out) mushrooms, chopped
2 tbsps. mayonnaise or sour cream substitute
1/2 tbsp. kelp powder (grind up your Nori flakes)
      1/2 tbsp. Dijon mustard
      1/2 tbsp. poppy seeds
Juice of 1/2 lemon (approx. 1 1/2 tbsps.)
      1/2 small onion, finely chopped
      1/2 cup celery, chopped
      Salt and pepper to taste
Pinch of Old Bay Seasoning (optional)

Combine all ingredients in large bowl. Add mayonnaise if necessary to make it moist. Serve immediately, stuffed into tomatoes or avocados or served on dark bread with Bloody Marys.

This is from “Cookin’ Southern, Vegetarian Style” by Ann Jackson.

Also, there are some good vegetarian fish alternatives out there. Check your local health food store (the fake salmon is especially nice!)
