I would like to make “Asian” style sticky rice (Japan, Korea…etc). I’m interested in making my own gimbop and other Korean and Japanese type food. Is there a special type of rice that I need to buy and a specific rice cooker to use that works best?

add alittle oil to the water to help (2 tbls) and yes having a seal tight steamer helps but is expensive

Add about 2 tablespoons of oil to the rice. I think a regular rice cooker should do the job fairly well.

You dont add oit to it. Buy short grain rice, sold for making sushi. I use a Sanyo rice cooker/ steamer. This cooker is foolproof. Perfect rice every time and handy to steam vegies on the countertop next to you while you roll the sushi.

Oil normally separates the grains, so I wouldnt use oil. Add coconut milk to it.

No oil. Any rice cooker is fine. Use a medium grain rice, California Calrose is what I, and most everyone in Hawaii, use. When cooking this type of rice in a rice cooker, you measure equal amounts of rice and water. Don’t open the cooker until it signals that it is done cooking.
If you did’t know, the measuring cup that comes with the rice cooker, is 6 oz., so a rice cooker that says “5 cups” on it has an actual capacity of 3 3/4 cups. I mention it, because my sister didn’t understand why her 5 cup cooker did not cook 4 cups of rice, until I told her.

Any Asian grocery store will sell sticky rice AKA glutinous rice. That’s the easiest/best place to find it. If you want to make sweet sticky rice you should add coconut milk and sugar. My friend gave me a recipe for microwave sticky rice (tremendously cuts down the prep and cooking time).
-Soak rice in hot water for 10 minutes
-Microwave rice for 3 minutes at a time until rice is translucent
I’m sure this will work for regular sticky rice if you are in a hurry!
