Rubbing Vodka or Rum on a teething baby?

November 10th, 2008 · 19 Comments

Has anyone else heard stories about this? My son is only 3 months old and not teething yet. But I was having a conversation at work with some co-workers about teething babies and one actually suggested rubbing a little Vodka or Rum on their gums to help numb it!

Of course I won’t be doing this when my son starts to teeth, but was wondering if anyone else has heard of this?? Is this insane? Is this what parents did back in the day when there was no Baby Oralgel?

It’s an old school remedy and yes, a very bad idea!

It’s an old folk remedy. It’s not recommended today (there are certainly safer remedies) but neither is it ‘insane.’ Baby wouldn’t absorb much alcohol.

(My mom used to tell me that that’s what her doctor advised — pour a shot of vodka, rub a little on baby’s gums, and then mom drinks the rest.)

it’s whisky….it numbs the gums. I havent tried it yet but parents did it all the time back then

It was done and most doctors agree that it is not likely to cause harm. But why take the chance? There is Oragel now.

I’ve heard of it, but never tried it. I just used oralgel :)

i think it is insane. i wouldn't want my baby drunk!!! lol…i think that there are much better ways of helping a teething baby feel better, like providing a teething ring, than to do something that is harmful to them, like using alcohol. i guess some people just don't get educated on the effects these things can have on a baby.

A lot of the older ladies in my family told me the same thing. I guess it is one of those old school remedies. I did not do it myself too scared to try it. I found some wonderful teething tablets that did the trick.

My Grandma STILL tells me to do this! I have 3 kids and the youngest will be 1 on saturday. He has the hardest time teething (and still is, he only has 4 teeth). But I dont do it! LOL I think it is insane! But yes, they did it back in the day!

Old fashioned methods of easing the discomfort associated with teething are often unsafe. Never attach a teething ring to a baby’s clothing or tie it around baby’s neck with a ribbon as both can cause strangulation. Also, never place an aspirin on a baby’s gums since aspirin is not safe for babies and children. The same can be said for the age old custom of rubbing whiskey on a baby’s gums. This is a definite no!

Each of us has a different tolerance for pain, and babies are no exception. Some babies sail through teething with barely an outward symptom while others appear to be in considerable pain. In addition to the pain relieving medications mentioned above, there are several other things that can help to make your baby more comfortable. Teething gels are widely available and may provide temporary relief. A good supply of icy teething rings will come in handy since cold helps to numb the gums. Many parents find that giving babies a frozen, wet washcloth to chew on is the best solution.

as others have said it was the thing to do back in the day. however it is considered child abuse and an individual could lose their child for doing this.

interesting… i got thumbs down for being knowledgeable?

Yes I have heard of it as well. I just do not see how it numbs the gums. We do have oregel now, but my baby hates it. I think she hates the numb feeling in her mouth. She screams more when I have given it to her. So now we just use ice pacifiers (fill the nipple of the pacifier with water and freeze it) and tylenol when it is really bad.

yes. this is something they did before oragel was made. babies only actually swallowed what was on your finger tip. they did it with Whiskey, not vodka. no, i would not ever do it on my baby. but who knows if it was 50 years ago right? lol

My family has done this and thinks it’s fine. while it does numb the gums it can get the baby tipsy and it really can’t be good for them

    • 15 frummum // Nov 10, 2008

It’s probably illegal and dangerous given infant’s tolerance for alcohol considering their underdeveloped livers, but yes, I have heard this too, although I heard whiskey. And trust me, at times with my too, I was tempted! It probably just sent them to sleep so they stopped crying…

I go with anbesol - liquid benzocaine for teething - doesn’t slide off the gums like the gels do!

    • 16 army wife & mommy // Nov 10, 2008

I think you’re thinking of whiskey, and I’m pretty sure my parents did this to me (as well as giving me wine to help me get to sleep when I was really young) and I turned out great! Haha, although like everyone else said, its not recommended. And I would never tell anyone to do it, it takes guts anyway. My husbands been talking about doing it whenever the time comes because he’s a strong believer in whatever his mommy tells him lol.

Don’t get me wrong, I love his mother and my parents said the same thing… But you can’t do everything your parents did!

My friends mom did it with his baby. He had no problems teething and had nearly all his teeth by 10 months. Started very very early

    • 18 Yvette C // Nov 10, 2008

Yes my pediatrician told me and my sister about it,she used it with her 3 kids and i used it with my 3 kids and my granddaughter. its suppose to be better then oral gel . my pediatrician advised me not to use oral gel because it hardens the gums.
I really doubt this is child abuse. its not like you give your baby a drink you simply put some on your finger tip and rub it on the gums. back in the day is a long time ago and i'm not that old im 35. And if your Dr. tells you about then i'm pretty sure its not abuse.
you can use any liquor not just whiskey.
