what does it mean when wine has “contains sulfite” written on the label?

November 2nd, 2008 · 6 Comments

i started drinking wine supposedly for the health benefits: antioxidants, etc. but a friend of mine told me to avoid wine that has sulfite. what is this, exactly? what are its effects? is it worth drinking wine for health reasons if it has sulfite?

thanks!

It’s just an allergy warning. Some people are very allergic to sulfites.

All wines have some level of sulfites in them, nothing is different some places just had to start listing that they contain them, I wouldn’t worry about it.

almost all of the wines produced contain sulfites. it’s a really common ingredient in winemaking because it’s so useful in killing wild bacterias and yeasts. it also adds some level of balance to the finished product. it’s not gonna hurt you at all so don’t worry about it. i use it when i make my wine and i’m still healthy lol.

They are naturally produced by yeast. Added by the winemaker to control unwanted yeast/mold (moulds) and bacteria.

    All wine has sulfites.

It is added to the wine to help with preservation.

If you aren’t allergic, no big deal.

    Cheers
