What food best represents American cuisine?

People might say sushi represents Japanese cuisine or pasta, Italian cuisine. Is there a cuisine unique to the U.S.A.? The recent question about how to make macaroni and cheese had 179 answers when I looked, making me wonder if it might be the national food…:-)

      Some of the best tasting foods in the world are American. Unfortunately, most of them need to be accompanied by the business card of a good cardiologist!

      I'd like to think it was a big pot of soup because we all came from different places at some point and got thrown into this big pot with all the other flavors and we cooked up nicely.
