i am confused how to transition a baby at a year from breast milk or formula. do you just stop worrying all together about how many ounces they take now that they are a year old, and let them drink as much or little as they wish?

for the most part yes, you can stop worrying about how much they are getting, even though doctors do tell you to give them at least 8 oz a day. i always just gave my son milk whenever he wanted some. if he didnt want any, that would be fine too…he is 4 years old and he is perfectly healthy. nothing wrong with him with him having alot of milk or sometimes none at all.

If you go to this website, it tells you how much of each food group children btwn 1 and 2 years old should consume each day..including milk
http://www.pdhu.on.ca/pdf/cfgfor~2.pdf
Children need at least 2 cups (500 mL) of milk each day…and if under 2 years old it should be whole milk or 3.25%
My son is 14 months and I give him one cup warmed in the morning by bottle and another cup cold at dinner by sippy cup.

Formula is the basis of a baby’s diet. (If not breastfed.) Cows milk is one part of a mixed diet containing food from all the different food groups. So it’s best to keep milk intake down to around 16-20 ounces a day. Too much milk can fill toddler up, leaving little room for other healthy foods. And since milk contains no iron, that can make him anemic. OTOH, he needs NO milk at all if he doesn’t like it. Just be sure that he gets other foods containing necessary nutrients.

the wic nurse told me, in a 24 hr period no more than 24 ounces of milk and juice combined and the rest should be water.

I have a 13 month old so I just went through this. My daughter hated cows milk at first so just transition slowly and don’t worry too much. At first, I had to add a little water to dilute a little bit because she would spit it out. I would go straight to a sippy cup - like a soft nipple sippy cup. 16-20 ounces in a 24 period is what your doctor will recommend. You can give your baby too much milk and cause Anemia. Their intestines cannot absorb too much milk and thus it can actually cause anemia (your doctor should tell you this at your 1 year check up and they will actually check your baby for anemia with a blood test). I would offer your baby 3 meals and 2 snacks a day then then maybe 4 - 5 sippy cups of milk with about 4-5 ounces each between meals. Remember to use Whole milk (not soy milk). I would not switch around to different kinds - just keep offering the milk and eventually she will take it like a pro. It doesn’t have to be exactly at one year. Continue offering breast milk or formula and then slowly add cows milk a little at time. If your daughter takes a sippy cup just start offering around the 1 year mark. If you notice problems in digestion just go slowly. We wait until 1 year for cows milk because babies don’t have the digestive enzymes yet to digest cows milk so be patient to aim for 16-20 ounces a day. My daughter would refuse it one day and then take the next day. There are some days my daughter drinks a little more than 20 ounces of milk if she is not feeling well and doesn’t feel like eating but only every once in awhile.
