you know that when someone call Texas the mecca of Mexican food is totally incorrect, specially when you visit restaurants in that city like Fonda San Angel Inn, or go to the downtown area and try those chiles en nogada at la plaza santo Domingo or probably you go to Veracruz and try the authentic Pescado a la veracruzana and i would go on and on and on, you learn that if you want to eat the best barbecue or chili con carne, please come to texas, but if you want to eat REAL MEXICAN food please go to Mexico, city or sorrounding areas.

I love {american} mexican food, but I went to Cancun a couple of years ago, and was served "authentic" mexican food. I hated it….absolutely hated it. I actually lost weight on vacation.

not true…you can find great authentic Mexican food in Texas. i grew up there and married a Mexican, hes family is a traditional Mexican family and his mother can cook. my main reason for wanting to go back home is all the great food. i know Mexican food, my family is Spanish and Mexican. ohh and we live on the border of nuevo laredo, the food is great there too, but don't say you cant find good food in Texas…especially if you haven't been to laredo, tx.

Nothing is like the real thing. Each area has it's own specialty that taste better when it is prepared by people who know how to make it from scratch. I not a big fan of mole, that you eat here in the states, but my mother in law lives in Puelba (known for it's mole) and it is so good. Same thing goes for many of the other dishes that I love Michoacan has the best tasting carnitas. My mouth is watering just talking about it, now I am hungry!

Is this a question or just a rant? I live and grew up in Los Angeles AND travel in Mexico all the time. I love the food in both places. As it is, Mexico City is one of my least favorite places in the country, overcrowded, polluted and the food… not so hot. There are plenty of places in the States making great, authentic Mexican cuisine. Take a little time, avoid chain places like the plague and go in with a better attitude and I'm sure you will find great Mexican food out there…..even in Texas.

Mexico City is an excellent place to try great Mexican food. One can find simply fabulous regional restaurants from all parts of the country and all serving very authentic and wonderful dishes. Whatever you love: Norteña; Vera Cruzana; Oaxaqueña; Yucateca; Champechana; Huasteca; its all right here. Also Mexican cuisine is today recognized by world gourmets as one of the top five international cuisines in the world and there is nowhere better to sample the finest Mexican gourmet cuisine than Mexico City. In fact the top chefs come from all over Europe to study here.

That being said, the northern style adopted and customized by the Texans and known here in Mexico as Tex-Mex, is also very good as well. Coming almost exclusively from the northern Mexican states, it is nowhere near as varied or versatile as one finds in Mexico City, but it is different and quite delicious!

And the person who claimed that Mexico City's food is "not hot" is either just ignorant or completely unfamiliar with the food and eating habits here. The sauces served in the "puestos," restaurants and private homes here in Mexico City as well as the surrounding Mexico State can be among the hottest you will find in Mexico. (Only the southern states consume hotter sauces and even most of them can be readily found here in the DF)
