Why do so many people hate Vegetarians? ?

November 4th, 2008 · 35 Comments

i am a vegetarian and when i told my friends that they basically gave me a look like i am some kind of freak and they started saying stuff about me behind my back. I am not the type of person that criticizes people and tells them what to eat, i basically am vegetarian and keep it to myself. I don’t see why meat-eaters don’t get criticized and vegetarians do. My friends call me the ‘animal freak’ which is completely untrue, yeah i feel bad about the animals but i mostly went vegetarian for health issues and it also gave me more of an excuse to eat healthier. I guess some of the people who criticize me are jealous because i lost some weight and am healthy and they gained weight and are not healthy. Do you criticize Vegetarians or can you care less if they are one or not??????
i can personally care less if someone is a meat eater or not, as long as they don't shove it in my face.

I just said i am NOT rubbing it in peoples faces.

People get angry and scared at things they do not understand or that are 'different'.

I could care less about vegetarians, I just hope that any that are close to me are still ensuring the regular intake of protein and vitamins that a lot of meat offers.

    I love you!

    Hate vegetarians? No.

Hate vegetarianism? Yes. Vegetarianism is silly. And then some do it just to feed their pride and to feel somehow "superior" to others, when in reality meat is equally as good and in some cases, superior.

If they are talking behind your back, they arent your friends in the first place…

I am an animal lover too. They are SO TASTY!

  • 5 kuntchuj // Nov 4, 2008

Personally, I don’t really care what people eat, as long as they don’t tell me what I should and shouldn’t eat myself.

In my experience, vegatarians are like ex-smokers. They’re not happy unless you do what they do.

By gf’s brother is ridiculous with his vegetarian/organic rants.

  • 7 chippyreturns // Nov 4, 2008

Depends, are you vegetarian because you simply don’t like the taste of meat, or are you afraid your hurting bambi?

I’d die if I was vegetarian. To each his/her own though.

I admire vegetarians. I wish I wasn’t so hypocritical and could become one. If I couldn’t buy a burger, or a nice clean packet of meat I would be a vegetarian. I couldn’t kill an animal.

  • 9 Lou // Nov 4, 2008

I don’t think most people care one way or the other. Are you rubbing it into peoples faces? That might be where the rude remarks are coming from.

  • 10 mohammadmel // Nov 4, 2008

the nature of human being likes violence, and novel studies said that meat brings anger and invite for some violence,

  • 11 sculptorclay // Nov 4, 2008

Because we vegetarians are outside of the norm. That tends to make people uncomfortable. Most people treat me just fine when they learn that I am a vegetarian of course I do not look down upon meat eaters because what a person eats is their personal choice.

Vegetarianism has gotten a bad name over the years due to the more radical elements in the community. Groups like PETA, and the evangelical vegetarians who aren’t polite to their meat eating brethren.

As long as its just a personal choice and you don’t try to push it on others, then I have no issue with it.

I don’t hate vegetarians but ..MUST HAVE MEAT !!

  • 14 Inanimate Phoenix Gratis Thunked // Nov 4, 2008

    I don’t.

I just find the militant vegans and vegetarians a wee bit annoying. But I don’t hate them. I just don’t get why some of them can freak out over a coop full of chickens dying and not bat an eye at Darfur.

  • 15 Jeff // Nov 4, 2008

Because of people like PETA who give all vegetarians a bad rap.

Though, people should be more generally accepting of anyone’s choices. As long as you don’t hurt anyone else, I don’t care what you do.

    Weird huh?
I found it to be a healthy and practical lifestyle.
After cooking two dinners for a year (hubby love him some meat) I gave up and we compromised. Now we all just eat far less meat than your average American family.

Good for you, though! Live it up veggie eater. You’ll probably out live me.

I could care less about what they put into their mouths, but I've never known a veghead who didn't try to make me one. I'm not saying you are all that way, but the ones who are can be very aggressive in their opinions. I don't hate anyone.

  • 18 Like a Fox // Nov 4, 2008

Ah vegetarians don’t bother me. I know many that are veggie through health problems as you said yourself. If they act like that then they are not friends, just arseholes.
Vegans on the other hand i don’t understand especially those that support PETA.

  • 19 satan.loves // Nov 4, 2008

Anyone who hates them is nuts. I give them credit myself for being vegetarians

  • 20 Me, Myself and I // Nov 4, 2008

I’m veggie, it gets on my nerves when someone I know starts to wave meat in my face, I have been veggie all my life.
It is really annoying, but I try to ignore it.
I don’t understand it though, we don’t go waving vegetables in the faces of meat-eaters. It is also very annoying going into a restaurant and finding that the only veggie thing is pasta.

  • 21 Scott // Nov 4, 2008

It sucks when you invite someone over for a BBQ and they tell you later they're a vegetarian. I don't get it. There's lots of things I don't believe in eating, like trans fats or onions, but if I go to someone's house and they serve it or offer it to me, I take it. It's rude not to. Eating meat once in a while is not going to hurt you or make you fat. If someone offers it, eat it.

My boyfriend is a vegetarian and I am not, so personally, I LOVE vegetarians. If I were you, I would express myself to your friends and tell them how you feel. If they can't respect you for your decisions or make efforts to understand your vegetarian beliefs, maybe they aren't as good of friends as you thought.

  • 23 athene_noctua20 // Nov 4, 2008

While it’s great that you don’t shove your views in other people’s faces, many many vegetarians I knew in college were very pushy about their eating habits, and very much liked to criticize from their high horses.

From those 4 years worth of experiences, whenever I meet someone who is vegetarian, there’s a small bit of me hoping I’m not going to get a lecture about how immoral and cruel I am because I happen to have an occasional chicken sandwich now and again. I imagine others might have similar experiences with other pushy types, and hence, there’s that reaction. I’m not saying it’s acceptable, but it might be a reason why some people seem to be so hostile.

I was raised (mostly) vegetarian, and wish I could still be, but for health reasons, I actually have to eat meat now…go figure, eh? :o)

  • 24 Sirius // Nov 4, 2008

No? It’s their choice what the want to eat. Lol I bet you would force your girlfriend to eat meat if she was a vegetation. EAT BABY EAT Shoving the meat down her throat.

  • 25 Nomad // Nov 4, 2008

i dont hate vegetarians, i hate the ones who think they are some superior to me for eing one and the shove it in my face, then again i hate all people who try to shove things in my face. i have several friends and family who are vegetarians, and i have no qualms with them

  • 26 Alex // Nov 4, 2008

Being a vegetarian can actually be healthier for you and the environment. The ecosystem (the living parts at least) are divided into trophic levels (producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, etc.). A primary consumer, when it eats a producer, will only take in 10% of the amount of energy that was in the producer. This 10% ratio is relatively the same as you move up in the levels. So once we eat a chicken, which eats bugs, which eat grass, we are only getting .1% of the energy that was in the grass in the first place! We get more energy from eating plants directly, and also, if we would get rid of more animals, we could greatly cut back on pollution caused by feces, etc.

  • 27 .. // Nov 4, 2008

    I hate gays not vegetarians

  • 28 Amalthea // Nov 4, 2008

Few things are more personal than what you eat. I can’t think why anyone would presume to dictate that to you. As long as you are healthy, what you eat is your business.

  • 29 Caleb // Nov 4, 2008

Like with many other walks of life, the radical sects have given it a bad name.

  • 30 crimthann69 // Nov 4, 2008

I do not hate them, but most are hypocrites and nutters that treat animals better than their fellow man.

Example of hypocritical behavior: Making veggies look and taste like meat. Eating eggs, milk and cheese or product that contain said ingredients.

  • 31 A Pregnant!! Christian // Nov 4, 2008

I don’t know. I don’t hate vegetarians though. I couldn’t do it, I like meat way too much for that to work, but it does have some health benefits.

But what I want to know is, how come so many vegetarians eat fish? Is fish a vegetable??

  • 32 Spiral // Nov 4, 2008

As long as they don’t tell me I’m a bad person for eating meat or tell me I need to change my ways, I can care less if someone is vegetarian.

More power to you for your dedication. Just don’t bother me about it and I won’t bother you.

    (Why is this in religion?)

  • 33 Gazoo // Nov 4, 2008

The problem is that vegetarians make it a point to tell everyone.

Seriously…you just said you did it yourself.

  • 34 space monkey // Nov 4, 2008

My guess is they are just reacting to the “extreme” types like PETAS and the vegans who do push that they are better people morally because they don’t eat meat.

Once your friends see that you aren’t one of that type, no one will think it strange at all.

Stick to your diet, obviously you are seeing the benefits of it. You will have the last laugh, when you stay healthy and they don’t.

  • 35 tOnY c // Nov 4, 2008

I have a vegetarian friend and I don’t criticize him in fact I admire him for having the balls to eat only vegetables and I have learned a lot of what he thinks on food.
He told me that some of his co-workers used to mock him about everything, and that one day they did this “prank” on him, he went to the restroom and when he came back in his office there was a plate with grass on it and a note that said: “Bon a petit…” He told that for this and many other worst pranks he decided to quit his job.
