Yams V. Sweet Potatoes?

We just moved from the South to Washington State. I went to the grocery store and whilst shopping through produce I noticed that both the yams and the sweet potatoes were the same price (1.49/pound, I'm used to 58 cents!!), and right next to eachother. After looking closer I thought the signs were wrong, then I realized I've never bought or probably even seen yams in the supermarket - besides in a can. I asked my husband and he didn't know, so I asked the produce guy what the difference was - he came over and called what I call a sweet potato a yam, and the other thing the sweet potatoe. As he walked away he said "one way to be sure is to look at the color" and he cut off a tip and the (as he called it) sweet potato was white and the yam was orange, and he told me that yams are orange and SP are not. WHAT?! I've been eating sweet potatoes my whole life. They're orange. Was he wrong? Am I wrong? Do they call things different things up here?
i sort of what to worry about it b/c i want to know what i'm eating - this WHITE sweet potato is nothing like what I'm used to, and its too startchy for me…
so idk which parts of the country they are interchangable - thus making them the same thing- b/c here i definately would not call them the same..

I always understood yams to be orange and sweet potatoes to be white. But the two names are interchangeable, depending on which region you are in. So don't worry too much about it.

Edit: Well in that case, I believe on the west coast, you want yams. I grew up in California, and we always called the orange ones yams.

I always thought they were the same thing and people just had different names for it. Northerners usually call them yams, and southerners usually called them Sweet Potatoes. But, I'm from the south too, so I'm not too sure.

There are varieties of sweet potatoes. Different cultivations and come in white and orange variations. Yam however has a pink flesh and not orange.

He is wrong. Sweet potatoes are orange and really nothing like a yam. People use both words interchangeably and this causes confusion.
